I've got a KX04, Homemaker kitchen knife. I love it, it's become my favorite kitchen knife. I'm thinking about getting one made just like it, the specs at the SFO say it's 7 1/2" edge, 13 3/4" overall, but I just measured mine & it's 6 1/2", 11 3/4" overall. What's the deal?

Hi Linda, thanx for the "head's up", I'll pass it on.

The MDS stainless that we used in the Homemaker is essentially the same as the MBS-26 we use in our regular kitchen knives. It might be difficult to have one made with steel that will perform as well. Both MBS-26 and MDS are propriatary steels. In our testing, we've not found many steels that can match them. That's why we use them. If we could find better steels, we'd use them instead.

Should you have one made, I would use at least ATS-34. 440C has a hard time being ground that thin at the edge. CPM-S30V is impressive in initial testing. Phil Wilson has ground it very thin in his filet knives with good results.

Thanks, I will pass this along to the person I'm dealing with, since both ATS-34 & 440C were discussed as possible steels.
Let me tell you again how much I love my Spyderco kitchen knives, actually they're how I got sucked into knives, in general. I was checking out kitchen knives on a professional chefs site, when I first heard of Spyderco, back in Oct., I think. Started doing a little research, found Bladeforums, went down the slippery slope...now I have 5 kitchen Spydercos(my knife that gets 90% of use is my K05, small serrated utility, thought about getting a custom, but just didn't think I could do better, I use it 5-15 times a day). I also have 6 other Spydercos (Calypso, Jr., Navigator, Dyad, Jr., engraved Dragonfly, Spydercard, & PE Viele). I love the ones I have & I'm looking forward to ones coming out & ones I don't have yet (Kiwi-maybe a Valentine's present, Dodo, would like to handle an ATR).Thanks for a great product & for response to your customers, just wish I could move back to Colorado & work for Spyderco...Linda

Thanx for the kind words and the support. Appreciate. Wed try hard.

We can test performance in the lab, we know what works. But only ELU feedback can tell us if they like it.

The K05S is pretty hard to beat. Many of the Alaska fishing boats keep red K05S's for all of the major cleaning jobs.

On your custom Homemaker, what are you going to do to it that is different from the original? Your custom guys will have fun doing the "Granton edge". Let me know how they do it?

Actually, I haven't noticed any great advantage to the Granton edge (so we won't be adding that to the blade), I'm mainly trying to reproduce the general blade shape (but with a point) and overall dimensions, it's not a santoku or a French chefs knife, it's sort of a cross and I find that I prefer a smaller , lighter knife. I have the sashimi knife, too & I love the way it cuts, but I like a little more knuckle clearance.
So, same blade, walnut or juniper burl handle, maybe a lavendar charoite spacer-just a dressed-up homemaker. I won't be seeing it for quite a few months, but I'm already thinking of it as the "House Goddess"...Linda
