Hey fella's...as part of my major I was forced to take a Western Civ II class, and as expected, I hate it. For the assignment we have to answer at least two of the four topics. I'm not looking for anyone to actually write an essay for me (although I certainly won't turn it down), all I request is some good ideas and suggestions. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Here are the questions...

1) Has your perspective toward one particular topic, event or era in the history of Western Civilization (as we've studied it) changed at all? If so, in what way has it changed? Rely on specific examples to support your response.
2) What, in your opinion, are some of the most significant changes that have occurred in Western Civilization since the era of the Renaissance and in what areas do you feel have we not progressed as we should? Provide specific examples.
3) Based on the topics we've examined in this course, do you believe that there will still be a distinctly "Western" world in the twenty-first century, or will the West "shrink" as a result of globalization? Provide specific examples to support your conclusions.
4) At the conclusion of this course, how do you see yourself as a student of history? Do you feel differently about yourself, history (in general), or the place of the United States in the much larger "Western" world than when you began the course and, if so, in what ways? Be specific in your response.

(For anyone reluctant in helping because I should be doing this on my own, please know I am a biology major so this class has nothing to do with what I want to do and would just allow me more time for studying things that actually matter!)

Well, the whole western movement, at least in the U.S., can be attributed mainly upon two events: the Industrial Revolution, and the Homestead Act. Read up on urbanization. The rest is up to you.

I guess it would help to know what the class covered...anything from 1555 (Europe at war)-to the present

We think alike..Industrial Revolution is the only thing I could think of. The homestead act is a great suggestion. Thanks!

2) What, in your opinion, are some of the most significant changes that have occurred in Western Civilization industrial revolution, abolition of slavery, universal sufferage, information revolution since the era of the Renaissance and in what areas do you feel have we not progressed as we should? we have become less civilized, at least as far as war goes: prerenaissance europe saw small wars; then came attacks on whole civilian populations: rape of nanking, firestorm attacks on japan "dehousing" etcProvide specific examples. if your teacher is "PC" they should like this

Why couldn't I get these questions when I got my History degree. They're opinions of what you believe. Back it up with a few facts and you're golden.

Significant moments: Industrial Revolution, Race relations, reconstruction, Cold War, Space Race, etc.

Question 3 is fairly easy...it would be pretty easy to prove that "West" will shrink as the years go by.

Feel free to email me regarding any other questions. zack.fraser@gmail.com

Lol I guess it all depends on what you like...to me this stuff is mind boggling! It's hard for me to even get things started. I jokingly asked my cousin how much it would cost him to do it for me because he has a degree in it from Pitt and I know is very interested in it but he just said I couldn't afford him.

I appreciate the suggestions though everyone

#1: No

#2: I was thinking industrial revolution and child labor laws, french revolution, american revolution, russian revolution, etc...

#3: globalization will continue to blur out the lines between east and west.

#4: see myself as an eclectic student of history. does not change how I feel about myself, the USA, or western civilization in general.

if your prof. is up for a little creative thinking, answer #3 in the negative using the largest culture, china, and japan to provide counter-examples. your prof. let the camel's nose into the tent by using "globalization". you would learn a lot by doing this work also.......................b

In the times of the Renaissance, men of good character and mind sought out knowledge and instruction in order to better themselves so that could then better mankind. Students today just post their assignments on some internet forum and ask people whom they have never met to tell them how a course these people have never taken changed them. This is both the most significant change and the way in which we have not progressed as we should have.

There. Use that as your answer. I dare you.

bryan,

i like you and you are a good guy. however, gollnick's post is the best advice you will get here.

the point of the exercise is for you to do some research and decide on your own what are the relevant topics needing discussion.

you can regurgitate what you read here or elsewhere, and perhaps get a decent grade. but you will not have truly earned it.

open a few books on history, read some periodicals, look around. what is important to us is not nearly as meaningful as what will be important to you.

good luck.

Hand washing. Theory of germs, etc. Anti-biotics developed....

Modern time: why everyone doesn't wash hands knowing the benefit.
Overuse of anti-biotics. Drug resistant TB, etc.

This touches on history/development of medicine, thought, birth rates, life expectancy, population, over-population (if that is your opinion:)).

I agree this is NOT the kind of assignment that I would want to do, I don't even like the premise behind the questions. Can't wait to see how the teacher grades all of these opinions and the "evidence" that the students think support their opinions. Just hope the teacher agrees with the students.......
