Honed My first Straight

So I got a Dovo Carbon Straight for Christmas. So first thing to do was to hone it of course :)

So I took the factory edge.

Not particulairly impressive , large random scratches , looks more like a saw than a straight razor , they stropped it with a poor strop because there was some convexity at the edge of the edge.

And I turned it into this.

This required a significant amount of work. I actually had to break out the Atomas (600 and 1200) to get rid of all the convexity it came with. Once I had that accomplished I dropped down to the shaptons (220 and 1k) to remove the diamond scratches. Then I switched over to Japanese Naturals and that's the result.

I did this freehand on 1x6" Edge Pro stones.

Thanks to Ken and Tom for the Advice :)

Nice! I used to shave with a straight razor. Then I lost about 50 pounds and I have trouble getting into the dips in my neck. I use a double edge safety now. Dovo's are nice. My favorite is a WM Elliot I scored off the bay. Ibroke the scales trying to clean it up and made new ones from clear acrylic. The little spacer in the bottom is a Clayton guitar pick.

Nice work. Have you spent any time at coticule place?

I believe Boker makes some nice natural stones for straights, but I know you have everything you need. I've been wanting to try a straight for a long while. Got as far as buying a soap puck. :o

Probably the biggest obstacle is that I started stropping my 5 blade disposables and the 10 pack has lasted foreeeever.

How do you find shaving with the Dovo? Does it pass a HHT, and what angle is the bevel?

No never been there. Heres an interesting article on coticules in general.

Funny , I have been putting it off for awhile as well. Then the Fiance got me this for Christmas.

So I did a test pass with factory edge (shown above) and was less than impressed. So then I honed it to my spec.
Shaving is as comfortable as I make it. Im still learning. But every shave is considerably more comfortable than the last.

The geometry is whatever dovo sets it as , you use the spine as an angle guide. This razor passes every test I have been able to throw at it.

How are you stropping your disposable razors?

Man, nice set up. You should marry that woman. :p

Riiight. Forgot the spine sets the angle. You should measure it anyway, just because.

The way I strop them is very complex.

I run the blade head down my (denim) pant leg before I shave. Seriously, it works ridiculously well. I tried thin leather and ChromOx but it doesn't work well.

Check out the website I mentioned. I go over there to read every few months. :)

Nice. I'll bet that edge gives a great shave now.

I've been tempted to pull the trigger on a Dovo straight for two years but am intimidated by the honing process. I need to pick up a cheapie and learn the mechanics soon.

I got an Edwin Jagger safety razor and EJ best beaver brush last year and really enjoy them. This year's presents included Castle Forbes lavender cream. The stuff is amazing.
