Honing Oil. Anything Special About It?

I pretty much use whatever oil is at hand on my Norton India Oilstone. That usually means 3-in-1 and recently I just used 5W-30 motor oil in a pinch.

Is there any thing to "honing oil" that makes it significantly better or more advantageous, and thus worth the price? Or is it like gun oil where many non-gun products work just fine?

My knives are nice and sharp with any oil. I am concerned about the stone and about keeping loose grit and steel properly suspended...that kind of thing.

Thanks.

i use 3-in-1. works great, much better than my "honing oil" from norton.
Just clean your stone every now and them with a plastic brush and soap.

I've used mineral oil for years. Way cheaper than "honing" oil and easier to clean up. Keeping the swarf off/out of the stone is the bottom line regardless of how you do it, right?

I've used several over the years and settled on mineral oil and cleaning the stone after each use . Many times I use no oil and like the way it cuts . DM
