Just wondered if there is really any difference in the honing oil advertised for knives and the old stand-by 3 in 1 oil? Thanks for any help on the question.

There is a big difference in the oils. 3-in-1 is a great oil for lubricating, but that is something you don't want when sharpening, at least not that much.

In fact, every knife sharpening oil I have used EXCEPT Buck honing oil lubricates the stone too much. The Buck oil just works a lot better. Too bad it's not in any local stores, I had to order recently from the Buck store. Even Smoky Mountain Knife Works, about 45 miles away, does not carry the Buck oil.

Thanks Don for the info. I will use honing oil for sharpening. I have used all kinds of oil in the past and just wondered. I am from East TN. The Johnson City area. My folks still live there. I live near Hillsville, VA where I am pastor of a church. Thanks again for the reply.

Hi Russell, I am an old Buck Rep, now in His service also. I suggest that you use automatic transmission fluid if you cannot find Buck Honing Oil. I went through gallons of it in my days of sharpening knives at sports shows. This is a tip passed along to me by Al Buck. He was a great man!! He had two brothers that were preachers and I am sure that Al lead more people to the foot of the cross than his dad ( a country AG preacher)and his brothers through the "message in the box" and his personal testimony.

Al had a tremendous impact on my life and I don't think I would be in the ministry today if it were not for him and his influence on me through simple obedience to Christ's commands. I was making too much money as a 30 year Buck Rep! Al is a perfect example of "obedience rather than sacrifice".
