Hi all,
Is honing oil basically mineral oil? Or can mineral oil be used as honing oil?

Thanks,

Bill

My impression is that not many people here use oil to sharpen knives.

I've never seen a need for it and it's messy to work with.

Yes, it can be used-as can water. Fluids help keep the stone from clogging, promote cutting, and leave a smoother edge.

I haven't used oil in many years sence I stopped using my arkansas stones. When I did though I used 3 in 1 oil and it always worked great, never used mineral oil though.

I prefer water stones to sharpen my knives, but on edges with particular forms (Karambit, "S" edge...) I use a home made sharpener that uses sand paper with oil, for the oil I use just the oil for sewing machines:

This oil works great for sharpening (on sand paper, I have never tried it on oil stones), even if it is not an oil made for sharpening.

For stropping I use cardboard with car polish creme.

When I use a stone I use marvel mystery air tool oil. But for the most part I use a leather strop and some stainless steel poishing compund.

I stopped using oil to sharpen with the Lansky system. I clean the stones regularly with Bar Keepers Friend to deal with any build up which occurs with or without oil. Dry stones probably do load up with metal quicker than oil on them.

I use food grade mineral oil as Norton stones recommends this and most all card carring meat cutters us it. Yes,CJ it helps w/ the build up and resistance. What ever you use, once started keep using that product. For using oil will build up deep in the pores of the stone. Then if water is used it doesn't seep in it just sits on top.So, often cleaning is important. With hand cleaner and brush followed by alcohol does a good job for me keeping my stones well tuned.DM
