What paste do you usually use on your strop to finish honing and polishing your edge?

What is the best place to get it?

Mothers metal polish - auto zone - walrmart - O'Rielys - dollar store

Jewelers rouge - walmart

3m 2000 grit - auto zone - walmart - O'reilys - dollar store, sometimes.

Aluminum oxide 800 - 1000 - 1500 -2000 grit -

Im sure someone will shoot off some others and do not be surprised to hear about the mass marketing propaganda that goes along with it.
The reality is, you can spend more to achieve the same results

Mothers mag polish works very well on most steels and works quickly too.

For the fancy high wear steels I like 1 micron diamond paste. DMT or CKTG has a house brand that works well too. About $12 a tube usually.

Good to know.

How do you clean your strop. It seems like after a while I need to remove the old compound and junk from it.

I use the lee valley green compound, does a pretty decent job I think. I don't clean my strops, just put some more compound on when it starts to seem like it needs it.

Lighter fluid, WD-40, or simple green ON A RAG, not on the strop. Should take most of it off, just make sure to let the leather dry before putting compound back on.
