Honing rods for convex edges?

Anyone know how effective honing rods are for touching up convex edges? I wouldnt use a low enough grit to take much steel off, but maybe something in the low end of the micron scale (say 2.0 - 0.5 microns). It seems to me that a rod would be really good for touching up just the edge. Am I correct in this line of thinking?

I recently came across some really cool microabrasive paper, and was thinking of trying to make my own one of these.

Any thoughts? What about a ceramic honing rod? What is the average grit size of ceramic sharpening mediums?

Using a stone or sharpening rod on a convex edge defeates the prupose of having a convex edge. A convex edge has NO edge both bevels roll into each other. You need something that will form to the edge, sandpaper over a mouse pad or even on you pant leg would work. Siguy made a good one out of an altoids tin putting a peice of leather on one side an a mouse pad on the other then using the inside for stroage of paper.

Stones, hones, and rods work just fine on convex edges. There is no need for something soft to form a curve. Just role your wrist a little on each stroke. Heck don't even really think about it at all just don't use a jig to hold the angle. I'll bet if you sharpen free hand you cann't help but convex an edge unless your very very good and steady, or your a robot. :).

Thats kinda what I figured. I picture running a rod over the edge kind of like a windshield wiper using my wrist as a pivot point (edge trailing motion, though moving the rod as opposed to the bade)

Ive got a few designs I think I am going to try out. I am trying to build a nice portable system for field sharpening my blades, and being a tinkerer, I figured I'd design something myself. (Ive got lots of woodworking experience, so I am sure I can figure out something)

Hand sharpening on a stone is always convex. There are many threads on sharpening here, just find a method that achieves the result you desire.
