Here is the original Hoodlum knife I made for Ron Hood. I was looking to make the construction a little easier so I have replaced the guard with an integral guard covered by the handle material. Let me know what you think of the change.

Bill,
I lurk here frequently but don't post often. I just wanted to say the change is nice. Looks like an effective guard, it has nice lines and is pleasing to the eye. And, it's in keeping with current trends to boot! Nice one.

Nice change Bill!

I should explain that I shot the photo of the initial design after the blade had just finished the "frozen Elk leg bone" test. The blade is coated with fats and marrow. The balance and performance of the knife is awesome and the fit and finish is excellent. This is a blade no one should be afraid to take into the field and use HARD.

I highly recommend Bill's work.

Awesome looking chopper Bill.I sure would like to test drive it.I don't see anything wrong with the change but if I had a choice I would pick the old style.Maybe because I see it as being a little more traditional.BTW what is the blade length.

Thanks for the comments guys. BTW I haven't abandoned the original design, I just wanted to offer something a little different too. The blade length is 11.75 on the Hoodlum II but I can make 'em smaller if needed. I am going to make one with an 8in blade real soon. Ron was kind enough to show my knife(and some of Trace Rinaldi's) chopping up a frozen elk leg bone in his video.Very cool litmus test for a heavy duty knife :) The sound of the chopping mixe with the closeness of Ron's fingers had me a little nervous but he and the knife came through unscathed :D

Looks like you could take down a good size tree with that knife. I like the integral guard better I think. It gives the knife a smoother look.

I think I prefer the look of the II over the original, gives the knife a clean line, and a refined look, but still looks like a heavy duty worker.

Robert the slabs are bolted to the blade itself. I tap the through holes on the tang and bolt each slab down. I also use epoxy to ensure everything is sealed. I too prefer the II NGK. I always liked the simpler designs:)

This looks like another "Gotta Have" knife to me. I especially like the revised version. Something about the brass guard on the first one looks uncomfortable to me. The way you did the integral guard on the second one looks MUCH more hand friendly to me.

I love that design! :D

I prefer the new guard.

I have a couple of questions:

What is the stock thickness?

What do you charge for a Hoodlum II?

here is a scan of a shorter HII right out of the tempering oven. Blade is 7.75 tip to handle. The handle is the same size as the full size model but balanced for the shorter blade. let me know what you think of it. Thanks
