Well, who said that staying up late and watching infomercials can't pay off. Flipping through the channels I stopped on the one that was promoting the vacuum sealing food saver. I have one of these and they work great. IDEA:eek: What if I wrap one of my horn handled khuks so the blade doesn't poke through the plastic bag, cover the handle with hooflex and then vacuum seal it for a while? Well, it works. I guess the theory is, occording the the infomercial, that the pores of the material in the bag open up thus allowing for easier absorbtion of the hooflex. I've marinaded venison this way and it only takes a few minutes for the meat to soak up the liquid. I am assuming the absorbton rate for the horn handles would vary with each different one.

Since the bag would 'seal' against the bare handle,
I wonder if putting some 'spacer' material around/over the handle
(an empty can maybe)
& creating an empty space would improve the vacuum somehow?

Great Idea!! Then place it somewhere nice and warm to help the process along. I like it! :D

Dean, and then maybe put good oil on the blade. Maybe it would penetrate deeper?

Another thought...the possibility of cracking the handle. Mine had cracks that have been repaired and I didn't notice any movement in them. But if hairline cracks exist or grainlines, this may not prove to be a good process. I may try it out if another crack develops just to see what happens.

Ben, you're a genius! Suck all the air out and replace it with hooflex. That's how they stabilize wood with resin to make knife handles. Never thought about using the plastic bags.

Cool

Steve
