Hey guys, so im laying in my room doing some work and i just looked over at my hookah and it gave me an idea. Having to get up to stoke a fire can be a pain and relighting your fire when u get back to camp can be a hassle. My idea is to carry quick light hookah coals. You can buy them by the case for really cheap and each coal can keep going for over an hour. You could leave your camp at any time and have an easy fire ready when you get back. Just keep a lit coal in a tin can or altoids tin with some holes in it for ventilation. It could also be used for transporting fire in cold weather when your fingers could be too numb to work a striker. Just light it at one camp and you already have your fire ready for when you get to the next camp. Let me know about how you feel about this.

I heard you can use a dried out cattail top to do the same thing and it will last for a few hours..... allegedly.

Chaga, tinder fungus, horse hoof fungus, turkey tail....most polypores when they are dry all do this and are not sold in stores.

Cool idea and from what I've seen (No I don't use the stuff FYI) there are good and bad brands of coals on the market.

Add a little Shisha to keep the flys away in black fly season. :D

IMHO I think it is better to learn and train with, what is available to you in your natural environment. You can't carry everything and in a case of survival, it's usually something that was not planned for, where training and experience pay off.

They also sell charcoal disks in new age shops that are used for burning granulated incense and whatnot. These will also stay lit and glowing for several hours.

I'm gonna own up to getting the giggles when I read this thread and the Quest for Fire dudes came to mind.

From my experience they use saltpeter as the igniter, like really weak gunpowder. the trouble would be keeping it dry... however if you are just using it to carry a fire, all you need is to dry it when needed (unless they dissolve when wet?)
