I got it today, WOW what a great knife. Can you give me some ideas about comparable knives? I've got an Emerson Raven coming but I know it won't be enough to feed this fever.

Congratulations! You will never regret the 710. It is an outstanding knife in all of it's various model variations.

If you're on a BM kick, you might also check out the 730/735 series. Same smooth Axis lock with a bit smaller, more utility-oriented blade. Also very acceptable for tactical carry.

Good luck.:)

I really like the 710HS, its cutting (slicing) performance is the equal of any folding knife I own. The M2 steel is quite hard but tough.
After reprofiling the edge in accordance with Joe Talmadge's instructions it is a cutting demon. I have mine thinned down to a highly polished 15 degree primary edge bevel, toppped with a 20 degree secondary edge bevel using a medium ceramic or fine diamond stone. It is a real slicer.
I was sceptical of Joe T's claims of 700% improvement in performance over stock, but it is true. The factory edge was way too thick and overpolished.
Enjoy,
Chad

i handled one at a BM and plan to get one in a few weeks, a heckuva good knife, imho.....

I've read w/ interest chad234 praising Joe Talmadge's sharpening info for his BM 710. I also have a BM 710 and would like to know where I can get/access these sharpening info. Thanks to any one answering.

Thanks Shootist16. I'm a member since 30 minutes and I immediately got a useful reply to my inquiry.
A great way to start my membership to this forum.
Thanks again.

Chad234,
Did you reprofile the M2 w/ a sharpmaker or something more course. I would really like to replace the 710 I had now that I have some experience w/ a sharpener that will work on the edge. Just wanted to know if the material in the sharpmaker rods will cut the M2.

Spyderco is introducing diamond rods for the sharpmaker this year.

That should really help with the reprofiling.

The standard ceramic rods will do the M2 as well, but it will take more time. Shootist16 has it right. The new diamond hones will be available soon. Re-profiling will be a breeze.

Dennis, will those (the rods) be available separately? I, and I am sure many here already have 1 sharpmaker :) So it'd be much better to be able to buy the rods vs. the whole set.

They will be available seperately. They are also offering a set of ultra fine hones through the Spyderco Factory Outlet. If the ultra fine hones go over well they will introduce them to the normal distribution network.
