but when you place an order for a custom knife from the maker and there is a waiting list, do you generally pay a deposit up front, or pay for the entire knife up front? just curious how the process typically works.

I have had both instances happen to me, I think it is something that should be openly discussed between both parties.

Your deposit may move you ahead of others ever so slightly:rolleyes:

NO ! Unless there is to be a large cash outlay for something like engraving, or preciuos metals, most makers don't want a deposit.

From my experience, most makers don't want any money at all until the knife is finished and ready to ship. Some of these makers will ask for a deposit if unusual (and pricey) materials are involved.

A small percentage of makers (maybe about 20-30%, by my estimate) ask for a deposit (typically $50-$100, from my experience) when the order is placed, and an even smaller percentage (about 5%, from my experience) will ask for the entire payment up front when the knife is ordered.

Most makers require no deposit. I will provide a reasonable deposit. There are some makers that I would have no problem sending the whole payment in advance if they requested it, but all these makers are ones that would never want me to do that.
