Hope this works

Nice! Fry that baby up! I agree with your statements, too. The Late Boy Scout and others on youtube have shown that the Recon Tanto makes for a pretty fair outdoorsy knife, though this is the first time I've seen one used on a fish. Looks like it worked just fine. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks Scott. We had a nice time up in the Boreal. The Recon made my wife (and myself) feel a little better in bear country, but we still yelled and whistled before going in.

^really a knife made you feel better in bear country? Nothing short of a larger caliber with hardcast would make me feel safer in bear country. Heck even down here in the swamps with florida black bears or big raccoons as we call them.......no knife makes me feel safe.

With brown bears or real bears .......id want firepower to feel safe.

That aside....nice catch..thanks for sharing.

Agreed. If I kept my firearms papers up to date I'd be toting a 12 pump. A knife is one step above nothing against a blackie, but what can ya do.

yeah canada..forgot about y'alls rules on firearms up there........

i'm with ya, best you can do, you did. whistling and warning and such and worked....you made it back to post pics.....that is all that matters.

Right now there has been a program going on by the RCMP to help bring people with out of date paperwork back into legal status paste into your browse http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/index-eng.htm

Interesting, thanks Bufford. In the last few years I have been watching the ever expanding monstrous flocks of Snow Geese every year and getting a bit of an itch. Considering that I am in a major goose migration flyway, I may start up again. Hard to say, I go in and out of hobby interests through the years.

Ya. We can have guns, and I did for many years, but I let the relatively simple paper work go idle and basicly croak. As a younger man I was hot and heavy into it. I do admit to missing a crisp break of dawn slow walk looking for bunnies. Popping a few in the head for the pot would be quite fun with a stainless Ruger 1022.

And to be honest I like some of the firearms rules up here. Basically you can't get a gun if you have a history of mental illness and or violence. And considering what I see in society now and then, I'm ok with doing a bit of paper work for the assurance that the punk kid in the front yard, screaming in his girlfriends face, doesn't have a gun.

"JH, for an interesting account of the killing of a bear with a knife read p.103 of Bear Attacks:their Causes and Avoidance. In central Saskatchewan in 1983 a black bear killed one fisherman, attacked another, and was killed with a fillet knife by a third party coming to the rescue of his friend. I fish that same stretch of creek occasionally. There is a memorial marker for the dead fisherman on the trail near where it happened. The book page is available on books.google.ca"

oh, i don't doubt it can be done.....but it doesn't make myself feel any safer. there is always two basic trains of thoughts on big bears. one being you are safe without any weapons by making noise...the other being no firearms less than a revolver in .44 magnum out of a 6"+ barrel as a backup and a .458 winchester mag will keep you safe. even though many have survived with lesser tools. i guess the old two extremes on either end.

i myself find a good larger caliber firearm with hardcast rounds to be a nice middle ground. shoulder shots tend to slow down predators at the minimum;) even with smaller caliber firepower...plus i have no brown bears in the swamps with me. only big raccoons. but..... i digress as i have led your thread way off topic...almost to the range of dangerous political theory on firearm discussions...and for that i apologize.

wish i had access to fish like that.

This is a sad fact for many of us, you are far from alone on this. I spoke with the people at the Canadian Firearms Association and they claim that the RCMP is willing to renew licenses for people who let it lapse in the past 10 years or so. Going back further one will have to go through the entire process again as a first time gun owner. Perhaps if the feds return to power with a majority they will improve the gun laws some more. Gun laws have improved a long way with the conservatives in power. There has even been some discussion about allowing carry permits for handguns in the future.
