Was all set to purchase a benchmade 710-d2 as an EDC. However Latley the Microtech Mini Socom (plain edge) 154cm has been catching my eye. I havent had the chance to actually carry the Microtech so I was hoping I could get some feedback, advice, opinions on the two knives. Thanks in advance.

Haven't handled any recent production versions, but the older one I have is a nice knife. The 710 is a better cutter though, my mini-socom is rather thick at the edge.

In regards to the lock I've found microtech linerlocks consistent in that they tend to fail a light spine whack (about as much force as their own weight hitting a hard object from 1-2 feet) a few times before they lock up solid. There is no vertical bladeplay after this is done, and no perceptible wear on the locking surfaces.

For general utility I think the 710 is a superior knife in all respects, aside from the recurve being a bit more of a pain to sharpen than a non-recurved blade. The mini-socom is a really nice knife though, it was one of my favorite edc's and still was even after I got the 710, it's since been supplanted by a spyderco calypso 3 and mini-manix.

My Microtech 2004 Mini SOCOM Elite Frame Lock I carry frequently. It's 3.4" blade is just the right size for me.

I think my BM 710 D2 might take a little harder use but I've not used either the 710 D2 or my Mt really hard. The larger 710 is fine if you need a nearly 4" blade.

I have only had experience with the 710 and it is an excelent knife that will serve you well if you choose to get it.

Went ahead and ordered the Benchmade:) Thanks again. (almost started considering the Spyderco Military but stopped myself before I looked at it too much. Dont want to buy both of them right now:) I really like the 710- cant wait to get it!
