hi there,

could do with some suggestions for fixed blades since i can't seem to find much on the web.

here's the three criteria for it:

- horizontal belt-carry
- blade length 5.5" to 8"
- 'regular' brand easily obtainable in Europe (so no Strider, TOPS, Busse, or whatever. just the mainstream brands so i can actually order one with relative ease)

waiting for your suggestions, thanks!

best reg's,

dennis

Hello Dennis,

I thought you'd never ask. I like the horizontal belt carry too. However, I cannot carry a knife with blade length of 5.5 - 8 inches concealed. I realize that carrying concealed may not be your objective. Anyway, here are my suggestions.

Bark River Knife and Tool just released a knife they call the Lil Chute. Blade length is 3.875". This appears to be a stout little knife. It comes with what looks to be a very nice Kydex sheath. You can see the knife at http://www.dlttradingcompany.com/index.php?cPath=24_307.

I have two very nice pieces from Bob Dozier that can be carried horizontally. I have the New York Special and the Agent. Both have a blade length of about 3.5". Bob's horizontal sheaths are truely excellent. They also offer a knife called the Arkansas Toothpick that has a format similar to the NY Special. They can also make a kydex sheath for you for a knife other than a Dozier. Bob Dozier also makes longer knives and I'm sure you could order one with a horizontal belt carry sheath. WWW.Dozierknives.com.

Finally, it seems to me, any sheath to which a Tek-lok can be fitted could be carried horizontally.

Where in Europe do you live? What are the mainstream knife brands that you can obtain where you live? Do you like any of the knives that you can obtain where you live?

just bought a spyderco temperance. I was just setting it up for horizontal carry before I went on the internet. It comes with a Tek-Lok belt fastener, and is very cool. check it out.

I agree, 5" is about max for concealed/comfortable/horizontal carry. Once you get above 9/10" OAL, it just doesn't seem to work as well.

If you have a Tek-Lok, try this. Attach it so you can wear the knife BETWEEN the belt and pants in a crossdraw. This pulls it in very close to the body and is still very close to horizontal. Adjust up over the top of the belt enough to get a grip on the grip and you're set.

Check it out.

thanks guys,

i basically realized there weren't many big blades availabl for hori. carry, because it doesn't really work.carry very well

the 3 to 4" knives don't do much for me when it comes to fixed blades in a sheath. i'd rather carry a spyderco military when it comes to small sized knives

as for the spyderco temperance, i'll remember that one, thanks.

brands like dozier are too hard to come by over here, since i'm done with cumbersome overseas shipping and payment, ebay/paypal, etc...

i've just ordered a Tek-Lok, and try to find whatever big knives i like and attach it to it. i think the Tek-Lok or some DIY belt-looping is the only way to get a big blade horizontally worn.

btw, my basic purpose for the horizontal carry is the concealment-factor and the comfort. i don't like a big knife dangling next to my side for anyone to see ;)

thanks for yer help,
dennis

I can carry a fairly big blade concealed, but it isn't horizontal. I have walked around with an 8 inch bladed knife and it was never noticed. But unless you weigh 300 lbs plus at 5'8", or proportionately taller, you cannot make hori carry work, not enough body width.

I agree with this 100%.

Dennis,

Bark River has a European dealer network. There is a list of dealers on the Bark River sub-forum of the Knife Forums.

Hey Guys..

Dennis....

although I make horizontal sheaths for knives on the large size,, I find a knife in the 3-5" range to be the best for carry...

The only horizontal carry position I really agree with is the up front BBC (Belt Buckle Carry) position....

This carry as far as I'm concerned is the best place to carry any knife...
Off to the side too far,, and you put the knife in possible control of someone else..
Behind the back or SOB, you loose complete control of the knife...

Just my opinion though...

I have found that my Mikro is easily the best horizontal carry blade I use. I like it because it is so small. I know you mentioned that you want a larger carry blade, but my Fox River for instance just is not as good horizontal. Too big to be as comfortable.

Well, that wasn't too helpful, was it?

Good luck!

**edit** I'm going to go ahead and call myself out on that last statement. I just had the thought that maybe my sheath was not set up right and that is why I couldn't get the Fox River to be as comfortable. Sure enough, I needed to tighten the belt groove so it sat snugly on my belt and now it is much better. Before it sort of sagged a bit and I didn't trust the knife to stay in the sheath. I can't wait to try this out on my next walk with my son. Looks like rain now...
