Horizontal Carry Fixed Blade for Backpacking

Hi guys, can anybody recommend a 3-4" fixed blade that comes with a horizontal carry belt sheath for less than $100? I have a friend who is looking for such a setup. He doesn't want to get a custom sheath and just wants one-stop shopping for an upcoming trip. He wants something like the Bear Grylls knife setup but obviously not something that overpriced.

The first thing that came to mind was an Ontario RAT-3 since that sheath can be used vertically or horizontally. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

The RC-3 and 4 can be positioned horizontally or vertically. Lots of other knives out there have adjustable belt loops and such, so I'd just ask about a specific model.

Thanks Eight Trigrams. Anybody know if a fixed Griptilian can be carried horizontally? From photos, it looks like there are loops on the back of the sheath you could slip a belt through.

IM thinking of the RAT Izula for this capacity. The plastic sheath could be oriented sideways on a belt. And on a pack, it would be light enough to wear on the strap.

Thanks jeff. Wow, that is a light knife. I have seen the Izula but never really paid much attention to the specs until you mentioned it.

Go with the RC-4 if you want production and rig paracord through the sheath rivet holds for either horizontal or vertical carry.

There are a number of custom makers will make you a sheath that allows both configurations. Here is a Bryan Breeden Knife with bocot handle and the sheath made by the maker. Cost was <$125 and wait time was about 3 weeks from order to my door.

Koyote will also make sheaths with the cross mount for duel carry option as well.

I actually have an RC-4 so I know what you mean. What a great knife with great carry options.

I hadn't realized the RC-3 could be set up the same way as well.

Thanks for the other sheath recommendations!

RC4 or RC3 with MOLLE locks will work perfectly. An Izula with a MOLLE or TEK lock works too.

I highly recommend these over the Fixed Grip.

I think the izula is the perfect knife for backpacking too. It's only 2.8 oz with the plastic sheath. I'm not building fires up there but I know I could with this burly little knife if I needed too. I posted some pics of mine while backpacking.

Tell him to check out the forum while he's there too. On average a traditional backpacker carrys over 30 pounds for just 1 or 2 nights out. My base pack weight, good to around 15 or 20 degrees, is about 7 or 8 pounds. Food and fuel adds around 2 pounds per day out and I never carry more than 1.5 liters of water(3.3 pounds) at a time.

Thanks a ton for the link and pics. Very helpful. I will definitely pass this recommendation along. I'm actually thinking of getting one for myself now!

for the price ontonio ontanion rat 3 ' very decent. saw 2 civilan spec ops in soldier or fortune mag. had rat3 strapped to thigh ;3 yrs. ago.

my vote goes too the rat 4 or rat 3 ,,great knives ,,can do what your looking for with the backpack

Consider a BUCK Gen5 this can be worn horizontally and attaches to haversack pack straps very well. Inexpensive and surprisingly useful knife on all round hikes.

Marbles Trailmaster is I think a small 3" blade D2 knife that has horizontal carry, don't own one but would like to.

I'll 2nd that on contacting Bryan Breeden...He makes a handy multi-position sheath & some Really AWSOME knives for just a fuzz over $100.00 Bryan is also one of the best guy's you'll ever deal with !

Check out the Fehrman Thru Hiker, a very robust skeletonized knife with a kydex sheath that can be positioned any way you like using paracord. Very good steel and scary sharp out of the box.
