I have had years of trouble with belt pouches for multitools. I prefer a horizontal carry behind my right hip for a Leatherman Wave. It is handy, but the side-wase presentation is unobtrusive; not attention grabbing. It works well with about any level of dress up to Tuxedo with a cummerbund.

The issue I have been having is retention. The flap-over keeper doesn't stay secure over time as the Velcro seems to wear out. Button snaps are awkward to refasten one handed. too. I have used various OEM pouches, OEM pouches from other brands and 'tactical" pouches intended for SWAT level use. All eventually let me down and I am out looking around for yet another ~$100 tool.

What is your experience and what do you do?

A long time ago, I made horizontal sheaths for the Swiss Army Tool, which is a sizeable item and pretty much just a big rectangle. I didn't want to have a flap closure so what I came up with was having the lower part of the leather top section to extend out as a strap that would wrap around the end of the tool and then fold back and snap onto a snap that I put on the top edge of the formed section. So from the side looking at the sheath, you can see the tool and the leather that wraps around it's end and over the top spine of the tool.

And if by chance you accidentally unsnap the strap it will fall away and you would notice it quickly, but, I've never had that happen.

high strength magnets might work but I don't know how to work them into the leather. maybe between layers of thin material? Look up via search feature some of the old threads concerning magnets for fixed blade retention in vertical sheaths. should be better surfaces on a multitool.

Thanks. Looks great!

I want to be low-key when it comes to EDC with a multitool. So the horizontal orientation in a dark color is my preference. Thebrown leather basket weave looks great, but doesn't a good look for me.
