Horizontal Carry Sheath Question...

Hey all,

I am nearly finished paying for a large custom bush knife. I am considering horizontal carry, but I have never carried like this before and am looking for some advice/pointers. If the mods think this should be in another forum, I apologize in advance, but I was hoping to post it in a high traffic forum to get the most responses.

First of all, the knife dimensions are as follows...

Blade Length- 8.25"
OAL - 13.75"

How does horizontal carry work for deploying the knife, re-sheathing, etc?

Would a knife this size be comfortable carrying in this manner? Would it be in the way at all?

Do those of you that carry in this manner carry the knife on your side or more across your back?

As I've said, never carried horizontally before, but it is appealing to me. I don't particularly enjoy carrying my other bush knives vertically, so I was hoping to try other options, but the sheath is going to cost some $$$ so I want to make sure I won't regret it.

Any thoughts?

I've never tried horizontal carry for a knife that big but I think it will be inconvenient and uncomfortable.

That's what I'm wondering, but I also find myself frequently annoyed with vertical carry, so I'm hoping someone out there has some experiences they can share.

Anybody?!?!? Pics would be appreciated also.

I think it would be a pain to carry that knife at a true horizontal position. I think it's just too big. I think that if you don't want vertical carry, maybe you could get a sheath made for it that holds it at a canted position, kind of like a sword. Splits the difference between horizontal and vertical positioning.

I have a horizontal carry knife sheath and yes it is different. The only problem I have is that it fits tight to the body and running my extra belt under it is difficult. Some guys like to carry theirs in the small of the back, this is good for getting to it and it is out of the way but re-sheathing is very difficult, plus if you backpack it could get in the way. My blade is only 4 inches so I could not tell you how it would be with a large knife. I like it for hiking etc. because it does not dig into my ribs and it is out of the way.

I carried a Tracker horizontal for most of the time I was in Iraq. Didn't bother me any, and re-sheating got easier the more I did it. After a couple months it was almost effortless. If you're carrying a pack, just make sure it rides higher than your belt.
