In recent weeks here in Shop Talk there had been several threads regarding sheath making. In one I had mentioned that I would be doing a tutorial on making horizontal crossdraw sheaths soon.

Well I finally got the tutorial finished. Its over in Sheaths and Such here on BF. Here's a link.

I hope that this post will be helpful to some of the guys here. Even though this may not be a type of sheath that is of interest to you, the techniques used will be valuable if you are making leather sheaths.

Please feel free with any questions or discussion.

I think you should send me one for long term testing and feedback...;)

Horsewright Horsewright you make it look easy and straightforward, but I'm not fooled for a second! I'll keep happily paying for the experts to make my sheaths.
Still very interesting to follow the process. Thanks for taking the time to document it.

Ya bet! Just takes practice!

Thanks for the tutorial. Your leather working skills are terrific. Hoping my daughter and I can get into it soon.

Thanks and you are welcome. Always available for questions over at Sheaths and Such.

You say this is your EDC holster. What are the pros and cons? I was considering this for an 8" oal EDC knife, but it may be too big. Would a canted pancake holster be better? It could be worn strong side or cross draw. The end user does not ride horse or motorcycle.

Yes I've been carrying this sheath in a couple of different versions for 15-20 years. The pros for me are out of the way, very comfortable, easily accessible with either hand and done right the retention is great. It will go into the sheath with a klunk. I can't say from my own personal experience that there are any cons. The wife has recently transitioned from a Horizontal sheath to a pancake style worn behind her hip. She found this to be more comfortable when bending over working on a calf. The seven inch overall rule was just from other folks experience and talking to folks. I have found that the occaional very large guy can still carry a little larger knife here with out getting it caught on everything
