Horizontal GIB?

Has any one done it yet? And if so are there any pictures of it? I have been looking at my GIB and thinking that I would like to be able to flop it over on its side like the TW90 and the Wilmont Grinder.

After looking at the TW90 and the Wilmont I like the idea of being able to flop the grinder, but my GIB's up right is only held in place by the 2 bolts suggested on the Polar Bear Forge site and isn't welded, if I go ahead with the idea, should I weld it in place?

Keep in mind this is just in the thinking about it stage and I don't have any solid plans to do it yet, I am just looking for thoughts, pros, and cons of doing it before I start making a plan of action. Ideally I would be able to just go out and buy either the TW90 or Wilmont and be set up with two grinders, but for me that is just a pipe dream for now:o

Thanks
George

I think it can be done & would be worth the effort.

The nice thing about the GIB is that it is essentially grinder lego - If you need to proto a change, you can just swap out that piece.

No need to re-configure the grinder. Just mount snowboard bindings on the wall and strap in!
Sorry. Been watching too many cartoons with my 6 year old this morning...

I learnt that strapping snowboards and skis to things that shouldn't have them is a bad idea:o I broke my shoulder riding this thing down a hill

Some ideas just need more development, man. A few safety features and a warning label or 2 and that thing could be a big hit at Wal Mart next year.

Unky, I doubt that you would need to weld it up, just mount the whole grinder on a hinged plate and tip away.
I saw a pic somewhere where the guy cut a hole in his bench for the motor to drop down into.

I cant say I have seen anyone take the GIB into the horizontal world yet. Although I would like to see it done. First off if your upright is only held on by two 1/4 bolts I would reinforce it before attempting this.
Hell if you just get some 1" square tube 6-7 inches long and drill tap it to the upright and baseplate you will be good to go I think. I agree with leadfoot you could either drop your motor down into your table or just bolt
down to a 3/4 piece of plywood so the hing point can be whereever you want it to be. Just ensure your motor can breathe as the TEFC fan is at the bottom of the motor.

PS good luck and we want pics

you guys are making this very tempting, I think during breaks from sanding tomorrow I will have to take a few measurements and come up with a plan:thumbup:

I plan on modifying mine eventually. I was looking at the hinges sold at my scrap yard for trailers etc and was going to weld them on, . I laid it on it's side and thought the mod would be pretty easy. I did weld my upright when I assembled mine with this thought in mind.
My plan was to actually extend the base plate a couple inches on the right, and have the grinder tip to the right.....Then, I'd remove a bolt from the from the tool arm slot and add all-thread rod to add a "kickstand" to the grinder....It might mean modifying the tool arm since it's on the wrong side....

I have been floating ideas in my head about how to make the grinder I want to build be both horizontal and vertical. I was thinking about using my engine stand (for automobile engines) as a starting point ...... but this weekend I got to see the Wilmont Grinder in action and had one of those why didnt I think of THAT moments  such a simple idea. Very nice machine
