Horizontal or Vertical disc grinder, does it make any difference?

Each has there uses. I have had both the vertical set up I like for squaring handle materials better, the horizontal mount I works well for sharpening and blade grinding. If I had to choose I would go with the horizontal set up; in my shop it has more uses.

The aluminum work rest is attached to the motor itself and is well worth the effort to install. A fence set at 90 degrees to the disc has been added since these pics were taken.

Nice setup Fred. I have a vertical disc, but also want to make a horizontal one for the exact reasons Fred outlined. Suppose you are going to have to do both, but probably should start with the vertical first.

Why not both?

I have "pin" holes drilled through the base and the table that I can drop some long carriage bolts through to secure it in place in the disc-vertical position.

Thnaks, Bruce :D. It's a 20x40' shop/storage unit we rent. It's not quite as roomy now as it was in these pictures with the addition of another worbench, and unfortunately, more and more of the shop has become storage for my wife's "stuff". We're actually building a house right now that will have a detatched 3rd car garage, and I'm going to consolidate some of my equipment to make a functional, if much smaller, shop behind the house. I can't wait until I can actually walk out the back door to go make knives instead of having to drive out to the shop.

BTW, Bruce. Did you know that you're my hero? ;) :D In all seriousness, though, I see your work as an incredible inspiration and a benchmark. I still occasionally show my wife (who knows nothing of knives) pictures of your work and say, "I wanna be like him when I grow up!" Your gallery on KnifeDogs is one of my favorite places on the entire internet. Keep being you!
