i would like to make a horizontal vari-speed disc grinder with forward and reverse. could anyone who is familar with this type of grinder recommend the hp, rpm and any other info pertaining to a motor suitable for this type of grinding. also whats the criteria for the variable speed controller? any help with this i'd be most appreciative. thanks

I have been using this system for years to grind blades. I recomend a 1 hp dc with good controller.
I got mine surplus at my local surplus type shop and bought the control. The control is a minarik (sp) I like it much . It does a great Job. The disk can be had from One of the supply houses. The 50-75 dollar one is the one you want made from metal. DO NOT BUY A 10 dollar one.
One I had the parts I just made a frame and C clamped the frame to a metal table. You can make whatever you want to make this part work. I like to be able to move the grinder and also set it at a height that I can sit at to grind making it comfortable.
The other option is to call around and fidn a vertical and convert it to your needs . I think true grit sells one and Al Lawrence (uncle Al) . Al is linked to Knifeart.com site.
You can also buy all new parts and put it together. I am on a budget most of the time and look for deals on dc motors. dc controllers and ac motor controllers every day.
I have converted many of my machines to dc or added ac motor controllers to make them vary speed.
