Horn Handle Treatment

In another thread, I mentioned that I had used Lexol on my two new 12" horn handles (until I could locate some Hooflex) and I noticed the 800 number on the back of the Lexol "little brown jug". Their customer service rep advised that although Lexol contains nothing thet will hurt, it does not contain enough lanolin to properly treat the horn. They have a subsidiary company, Corona, which makes a hoof treatment which is competitive with Hooflex, but without the pine tar that gives Hooflex its' aroma.

Just as information, in case you're out shopping for one, here's another to ask for.

I wasn't able to talk to the rep long enough to get much detail, other than "no pine tar". He did say that a friend down there raises long horn cattle for show, and uses the Corona treament on the calves, from the time they sprout 'til they enter the show ring, and always gets extra points on appearance of their horns. To me (I'd never heard of long-horn show cattle) it doesn't sound like something that would contain turp. I've found a co-op that has Hooflex, but am still looking for the Corona.

Speaking of which, over I-80 out of Reno, heading toward Sacto, where the road takes a last dip before pitching back up and over the Truckee river, there used to be a ranch on the north running some kind of african longhorns. You see or hear anything about them lately Unc? They might have been run out to build more homes by now, but sounds like you could find out some interesting stuff if you took the time to run it down.

Now that's what makes for an education, and this forum. A means to say "stop the train, I want to see this" and the willingness of fellow passengers to come check out what you saw. Then you can all get back on board and thrash it over once more until someone else sees something else to check out.

Rusty, you've nailed it exactly!! The Khukuri, the culture it comes from, the offshoots you find along the way, and the reactions of the people you share them with are an education. There are posts on this forum that, by title, just don't interest me. I read them anyway, and am never disappointed. When I cash it in, I think I'll still come back and lurk

Yeah, and I'm missing most of the rest of my deck. Besides, I'd probably come back as one of Yvsa's cookies, and couldn't get to post

I'm just up, I guess, 'cause I found a solution to a two-year-old problem. I found some grips for my little 5-shooter that turn it into a K-Frame as far as handling is concerned. It now handles as well as the "12 AK I got for it (at Rusty's suggestion, BTW). As Rusty said, they make quite a pair.
