Hi All,

Just finished my first HT using a muffle. (2.5" X 15" mild steel pipe with end cap that I found in the old shop I use).

For you beginners out there (like me), you should seriously look into adding this tool to your list if you haven't already. I was able to get MUCH better control of the heat allowing me to do a 5 minute soak at ~ 1500F on my 5160 blade - third knife so far. Another plus was a significant reduction in scale.

Will post pics of the knife when it's done.

Again - thanks all the way around.

A muffle (not to be confused with a muffaletta or a muffette) is the most useful addition to a forge you can add. I don't consider it an addition, it is a requirement really. The forges I make come with a muffle.

BTW, a muffette (teen age girl) is a nice addition when holding the finished knives in photos, but is not a necessity. You can share your muffaletta (best sandwich The Big Easy ever served - Central Deli) with the muffette who was holding the knife you had in the muffle.

some people........ some people like cupcakes exclusively. While myself, I say, there is not, nor ought there be, nothing so exalted on the face of gods great earth as that prince of foods..............the muffin. ( ZAPPA: The Muffin Man )

Oops, you said muffle, Sorry ;) Yes, the pipe works pretty good doesn't it. Did you use a pyrometer in the tube to monitor the temp ?

Stacy, my wife was a muffette when we met :D Now shes my muffin, which would make me...............The Muffin Man ;) ah yes, nothing so exalted on gods great earth

Take it from here Fred R. :)

The torch I use for the small forge I have doesnt seem to want to get hot enough to heat the knife in the pipe to 1500:grumpy: . Maybe I will have enough money to get a real forge someday :( Anyway, I guess for now ill just take your word about how well it works

Should the pipe be open on both ends or capped inside the forge?

Close off the back of the pipe. You can make a soft fire brick plug for the front ,if you want to. Put your thermocouple in the muffle, so you know the exact temperature of the blade being heated. Some folks put a few wood chips in with the blade to consume oxygen, but I don't think that is necessary.
BTW, DO NOT use galvanized pipe, use black iron pipe or stainless.
