Anyone have a good source for horse butt strips? I used to get them from Siegel's leather. I just purchased some from Zack White Leather but they are garbage, all stained, chemical burns and most are closer to 4/5 oz instead of 6/7 oz.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
-John

Damn, that's terrible. I used to get horse butts from Siegel of CA, too. Last time, I stocked up. Then they went out of business and I'll soon be in the same boat as you. I had found Horween leather mentioned as a source somewhere. One would probably have to contact them, their website is a bit minimal. Springfield leather carries horse butts at a very good price, but I don't know about the quality. The weight is not listed. Might be a good idea to get them on the phone, too.

I'll be very glad if someone chimes in here with a good supplier. I don't really want to go back to cow leather.

Yeah, I know where... my next door neighbor's back yard.

... anyone know where I can get some legal ostrich toes for knife handles?

When I try to look at Wickett and Craig, I get big warning banners and stuff from both Google and Firefox about malware, and known attacks at this page. Hope they clear that up soon.

Check with Aldo.

Sam is always calling him a horse's ass. Maybe he has decided to capitalize on it.

This title conjured up all sort of images in my mind when I first saw it, none of which I can talk about with a straight face though right at the moment!

My first thought was I have never used a horse butt before I have awoke next too a couple the next morning, back in my younger, dumber, drinking, bachelor days!!!:D:D:D See I told you I couldn't keep a straight face!:p:D:D:D:D

Sorry I couldn't resist that!

Thank you for all of the new leads, i will look into them this week and post my findings. Also, thank you for the entertaining responses, all good.

Salem, Steve Siegel told me last week that Horween was where they got their horse butts from, i am not sure if they sell retail but i try to find out.

give them a try they have allot of different leather hope this helps.

I've read elsewhere that horse leather is much tighter grained than cow leather, and is more durable. My experience with it seems to bear this out.

It was used almost exclusively in high quality razor strops, due to its grain.

The stuff Siegel had has a very hard surface, the result of a "jacking" process in which the leather is compressed severely between steel rollers. I could form it easily, it retained that hard surface when dry again.

Also, the price was right...
