Horse Power

I had a friend that worked as a teamster logging not that many years ago, so it is still being done in places or perhaps being done that way again.

I had a neighbor who logged with a mule in the 70's. He had a big solid white draft mule that could pull a train. That ol' mule was as calm as any brute I ever saw, kid's could climb all over him and he would never even open his eyes. When the gear was put on him and he was backed up to be hitched to a load his hind feet would dance in anticipation. That mule wouldn't jump the gun, he would just ease into the load, seemingly testing the weight. If the load would move, he would just pull it until you said woah, if the load didn't move he would get lower to the ground until the load moved, or he busted through the collar.

Ernest, they were very well mannered and behaved to the commands. Well trained. I love to watch a beautiful team of draft horses work together.
