Are there any farriers out there with the history of horse shoes.
I make them into letter openers. I sold a couple to the art gallery today. I would like to put some interesting info with them.
I.e why is it lucky etc . I know its not really a work shop question
but I thought some of you forgers may be farriers (not sure of the spelling) The shoes are quick and easy to make just cut them in half forge the blade quick lik on the belts $25 thanks for comming. only for letter openers will not hold an edge for a real knife. Nice little table filler for shows.

Someone around here is doing the same thing. Working the handle end into a face by stamping with chisels and hollow round punch for eyes.

You might try www.keenjunk.com for more info on your questions or do a search for farrier to find more people doing horseshoe work.

Reg, way back when i went to farriers school i asked the same question. the story i was told was back years ago the devil was walking through a town and was going to steal the soul of the local blacksmith. well the smithy not being all that inclined to give up his soul he decided to hotshoe the devil and the devil ran off howling in the night. that is why you hang a horseshoe above your door for luck it keeps the devil out of your house. but you have to hang the shooe open end up if you hang it open end down all of the luck will run out.

Thanks for the reply. Great story. I will use it.

I sent a couple of messages to farrier schools of the net and did not get a reply. Probably to busy or just too tired.
