I read an article about using horse stall mat rubber material for knife handles in the latest issue of blade magazine
does anyone know what type epoxy will work on these, and whether they can be sanded to shape?

I used Devcon 2 Ton with crappy results. It just wouldn't hold the rubber scales. When I used the Super Glue like suggested, I got great results :) I bought some slower curing super glue for my next knife using the horse stall matting. The one I used the super glue on has not had any issues so far in over a year since I have been using it. For shaping the sclaes I used a 36 grit belt and a file. The matting is a good working handle but will probably only be considered pretty by it's mother :D It did shape well though. Stinks to high Heaven in the shop though but that is to be expected from grinding tire material.

Snagged this one off the Exchange a while back,a grippier, more secure handle I'd be hard pressed to find but I'm not sure what kind of epoxy/glue Bailey used.

Loctite 326 is what I use on my handle material and inlays. It cures in about 45 seconds and is usable in about an hour. Try to peel it off and there will be more rubber on the steel than in your hand. It is expensive, but goes a long way. I have been on the same bottle for two years now.

There is also a type of S/G that comes in a tube that looks like a tooth paste tube. It is a thick gel. You can find it at hobby shops that specialize in model and miniature airplane building. It is very tough stuff.

Just another choice.

Rubber such as SBR and EPDM can be difficult to bond due to a relatively low surface energy and some of the processing aides used including paraffin wax. After some fairly exhaustive trials of different CA glues about seven years ago I found that 3M Pronto CA40H works the best on EPDM rubber of the dozens I've tried.

I Have Had Very Good Results With Black Rtv Silicon. I Use The Plain Kind That Has The Vinigary Smell To Itnot The Automotive Ultra Gasket Type. The Smell Is Acetic Acid And It Seems To Create A Good Bite Into The Steel.

i use regular superglue on my handles but i rough up both surfaces good with a piece of 30 grit belt and it holds really good. i had to replace a side once and i had a heck of a time getting the old piece off.

I had a naked Mayo neck knife that I had LINE X truck bed liner sprayed on the handle.....really makes a good secure grippy handle also...linex is more "rubbery" than the rhino bed lining....just a thought for this thread ;)
