Horses and siblings - A long rant

I just got back from the hospital. My Mom got bucked off her new horse and broke her ankle. This is the third and worst injury she's received from this horse in the last three weeks. The horse has kicked her(stitches in her leg), caused her to gash her finger(stitches), and now broke her ankle by bucking her off. It looks like there make be some extensive tendon damage as well, but they can't tell until the swelling is down. After talking to Mom she mentioned the last owner had been killed riding the horse in an accident and that is why she got the horse so cheap. At this point I'm thinking the horse is "Christine" from Stephen King. She's been riding for probably 60 years and her biggest fear is getting thrown from a horse and hurt. She has been buying and selling horses the last couple years like crazy because she can't find a horse she feels safe riding. I've rode the same horses she's had problems with and I had no trouble at all and I'm not a horseman by any means. I'm convinced that the horses sense her fear and it makes them jumpy and that causes the problems so she gets rid of that horse. I've suggested that and she agrees with me, but my sister keeps talking her into getting a new horse soon after she gets rid of one of them. She just doesn't get that Mom no longer has fun riding and is scared of the horses.

My peeve today was Mom calls me and asks if I'm doing anything. She sounded funny on the phone. I said I had to meet with a client in a few hours, but had a few hours to kill. She then tells me about getting thrown from the horse and that she made it home, but as soon as she took her boot off she wasn't able to stand and couldn't get up off the floorbecause her ankle kept flopping out(WTH is flopping out?) She then tells me that my sister who lives 3 minutes away isn't able to come help her because she has to go to the post office and then go to work and doesn't have time.

I tell her I'm on my way and to not do anything silly till I get there. In rush hour week end traffic it's going to take me an hour and a half to get there. GRRRR. Any idea how frustrating that is???

Well, my sister calls me and tells me she is now going to take Mom to the hospital and drop her off at emergency and can I pick her up when they are done with her, she has to go to work. Did I mention this is the same sister that emailed me to tell me I didn't have to come up to take care of our Grandfather for the weekend because he had broken his hip and was in the hospital. He never recovered and passed a couple weeks later.

Anyway, I finally get to the hospital and they get the x-rays back and she had definitely broke her ankle, so they splinted it up and told her to make an appt. for a cast when the swelling went down. After the hospital we went to the pharmacy to get her pain meds Rx filled as she was in a lot of pain. It was going to be a 20 minute wait so I suggested I walk over and get some ice cream at Baskin Robbins. She thought that would be great. As soon as I walk in the door their power goes off. Ten minutes later they don't know what happened and can't sell me anything or make any smoothies or shakes. :grumpy:

I give up and walk back to the car. We go back to the pharmacy and pick up her meds and go home. I fed the cats, got her mail and basically did all the chores so she wouldn't try to do anything. Of course, then she tries to get a glass of water and forgets her ankle is broken and only in a splint. She immediately falls back into the chair in agonizing pain.

After a few more minutes the pain meds kicked in and she was feeling much better. Soon after she was sleeping.

What a crazy freaking day.

Smoke up for you and yours, Ted. Sounds like a hell of a day. Horses scare me too...but I'm a big chicken, anyway.

I had a co-worker get kicked upside the head by a horse once; blacked both her eyes and broke her nose. She said it was a car door shutting somewhere that set it off. Peabrained skittish creatures, apt to fly out over nothing. I'll grant they're pretty, and were indispensable before H. Ford did his good work, but I can't bring myself truly to like them. Our spear-chucking ancestors had a better notion of what horses were good for.

Dang, Ted.....gotta all happen at once?!?

Hug your kids/wife/loved ones....when it rains it pours!

Ted, I have no doubt that a nervious rider makes the horse skittish. We had an middle-aged mare when I was a kid and we lived on a ranch in Nevada. She was a sweetheart. I rode her almost every day. She followed me around like a big puppy.

One day, a neighbor lady anounced she would "maybe" like to try a ride for the first time. Over the next hour, she talked herself into trying. She could never get mounted 'cause the mare kept shying away. The mare had NEVER acted anything like that way before and never did so long as we lived there. And she had no problem with many first time/strange riders.

I used to ride a lot and I've been thrown a few times with the damaged vertabre to prove it.Horses are a lot like people, there are good ones and there are nut cases, but I'm sure if your mom is showing fear, the horse is reading it.A horse that already killed someone isn't a good match for a 60yr old woman.Hope she comes through this ok,if she is still looking after all this, she should be able to find a trainer that would match her up with something more suitable.

The fun never ends, does it? :) You did real well, getting through a day like that. I hope your mother's ankle heals well.

I think it's time for a new hobby. Forget horses. Get her started on something a little safer, like bird-watching, or rollerblading.

Best wishes, Ted. Hope everything works out. Sounds like horse riding has GOT to go. Also sounds like your sister needs one up the side of her head.

+1 bro

dang and I thought I had a bad day!

Everyone I know who rides horses has damage. The cowboys on the ranches have numerous broken bones.

For this reason, I'm hoping my tough middle kid does not go into rodeo.

Carry on, brother Ted. Sister needs to learn her needs are not her mother's.

Smoke up for your mom. As for the rest, you can't control the actions of others but you did good.
