Hello! Horsewright Horsewright I really like your knives and sheaths!! I just read your tutorial on sheath making! Thank you!!
My question is, could you share how you attach the leather lanyard on your knives? I’ve tried to figure it out but have had no luck.
Thanks!!

Update: I may have figured it out! It’s a split braid like you use on a saddle string!

Yes you are correct, its called a blood knot. Its the same knot used on western saddle strings. There's even a special tool to do it called a bleeder which I have, but don't use. I have often thought on doing a WIP/tutorial (in fact just the other day), on how to do this as I see it wrong more often than not on other knives. A good part of our business is building my sheaths for other folks knives and I need the knife to do this. So I see a lot of knives and don't see this knot done right very often. Give me a day or two to put some pics together and I'll get er done.

That would great!! I would appreciate that!!

I learned that knot as a BLEED knot. I think it got called a blood knot accidentally a while back and now both are used synonymously. The tool is called bleeder tool and is a triangular lance. You can also use bleeder pliers to punch the slot and pull the tab through.

I use a pair of needle-nose pliers that I ground down to look like backwards scissors. I punch it through the leather, grab the other end of the strip of leather, pull it through, and then repeat on the piece I just pulled through.

I believe blood knots are used for tying flies on fishing line.

Absolutely right although blood knot is common usage these days. I do use the other blood knot quite a bit too. Not only in fly fishing. I drown a fly ever chance I get, but I use it on my big Cobra 4 leather sewing machine too. When I change thread, either colors, sizes or just a new roll, instead of rethreading the whole machine, I will cut the old thread before it has started into the machine and tie the new thread to it with the fishing blood knot. I then can pull the new thread all the way through the machine by the old thread, except through the eye of the needle. Saves a LOT of time. And headaches!

Hey Stacy do ya want the WIP here or a stand alone post?

Yes, a stand-alone post would be best. I'll try and put together a quick tutorial on making the tools for a bleed knot.

Would there be a way to combine the two WIP posts - tool and knot? Might be too much trouble, just have links to other thread in each post would be just as good and perhaps easier.

Thanks to both of ya'll for the WIP. I've done that bleed knot a couple of times years ago on saddle stuff, but had to "figure it out" each time. I didn't know about the tool to help with the knot. For sure I had no idea of the actual name for the knot.

I would just post the tutorial in Dave's thread. Others could also post any tricks or tips there.
