Here's a heads up for you guys. I just got the Enco newsletter, and they have an awesome sale going on right now, with FREE SHIPPING!!!

The item that really sticks out for me was the granite surface plates. They are all on sale, and FREE SHIPPING!!! You can't beat a deal like that. When I bought mine from Grizzly, I paid more to have it shipped than I paid for the surface plate itself!

Check it out, my brothers:

yikes!

guess I'll just search it online....

Speaking of surface plates, I found a few extras at a local company that I can have for almost free. The problem is that the smallest one they have is 3'x3' and I don't have any place in my shop that it would fit:(

My wife suggested using it for a dining room table..:)

LOL, John I feel your pain. A machinery reseller I go to here had a couple like that. They were made by Starrett and aptly named, "Bedrock" or something to that effect. They were pink granite and were about 10" thick. He was actually trying his best to get rid of them. I could have had one for a song, but geez, that darn thing must have weighed a half ton!

Hi Knifemaker type guys.
About granite surfaces. I'm not a knifemaker but us leather guys use them for stamping leather. I recently went to a local gravestone monument maker and asked if he had any scraps and he gave me a nice piece about 15x12 and about 10 inches thick for free from out in his yard. Not sure ifit's exactly flat(that's not very important to me) but you might want to check them out in your area.

PS-dont take it for granite:D
sorry, couldnt resist.

It the latest blade, Wayne Goddard says he and a friend used some granite headstones to forge blades. Said it's quieter than an anvil.

Can anyone corroborate?

maybe they should just work on the new 2005 Master Catalog :D

J, Wow! The Pink Starretts are their top grade of inspection plate if I'm not mistaken. Those things were a fortune new. Thousands of dollars!

Lifter: Headstones might be fine for stamping leather, but wouldn't be nearly flat enough to really qualify as a surface plate. A plate like a Starret or Microflat are lapped to be flat to within several millionths of an inch on 5 axes to provide an absolute reference for precision measuring. They, like all measuring tools should be kept at 68 degrees too if you want to get picky.
