It was hot today, low 90's......but not as hot as the next three days will be - 100 each day is forecast.

How have you chaps been doing out in the red/orange band this week? I see some places with 105 and higher.

Hi Stacy,
I got a call from a manager from the job I had gotten laid off 3 years ago. He wanted to know if I wanted to come back to work for him in the air conditioned tool room until at least the end of fall. I had to think about it. I would rather make Blades but I Took the Temporary possible Permanent job. It will at least keep me out of the heat and help me save for a hydraulic press.
It will be at least 95deg's tomorrow. Heat index at 100degs.
If the temp in the garage where I forge goes over 92deg Heat exhaustion becomes a issue.
It is important to learn the signs of heat exhaustion because the next step Heat Stroke can kill you.
I Hope I didn't drag your topic around to much. Sorry if I did.
Any way Try to keep COOL!!!!!

I think today we hit 30 days over 100 for the summer. Dallas has had 18 or more above 100 in a row. The highest we've had here was 112F, just under the all-time hottest temp in Lubbock of 114F. In the canyon, there's a thermometer at the trail head that pegged at 130F. That's probably about 10 degrees off on the plus side, but still, 120F is entirely possible down there.

The worst part is the lack of rain. This is the driest time period we EVER had in Lubbock (or at least since records started). The soil is just turning into a very fine powdery sand. We're building a house, and they dug down about 8 feet to get to the sewer tie-in. There's not a hint of moisture in the soil until well below 6 feet.

Stay safe guys and drink lots of water.

Dave - not a side track at all. Anyone who works in heat should learn about heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is a real bad sign when you stop sweating.

Out in the forge area it gets about ten degrees hotter than the ambient when I am running the forge. I have to set up a big fan to keep the sweat evaporating and drink a bottle of water every ten minutes...or just go inside and type on the computer until a cooler day. A few years ago the thermometer read 115F in the forge when I finally went inside.

I stopped working betweeen 12-3ish due to the heat. Im just a hobbyist so no big deal here. thats just my computer or tv time lol.

We're still waiting for summer in SW Washington!!! It's been like our late April/early May weather all summer. Seriously have only had a few really nice days. It's actually living up to the reputation that most people think of when they think of WA.... RAIN.

Helps to keep everything green here Nick . Not to much sun so far , but our household water supply is from rain water collection so I do not complain too much when it rains , I get to take a shower .

I would be happy for some rain! 110 degrees today...at 99% humidity and my yard looks like a dead wheat field....

It was 82f here today.
Looks like we are getting screwed out of our summer.
It is usually over 100f this time of year for us.
I have to actually work to get myself to sweat.

We had so much rain early in the year, two or two and a half inches at a time, that now its almost jungle like. I've never seen such a divergence of wild flowers and plants.
The corn loves it; I side dressed it with 20-10-10 just before one of the downpours and I swear it grew a foot the next day. It set three and four ears on each stock.

Stay safe, Fred

It hasn't really been any hotter than normal here, but it's still hot (and humid)! Sounds like you guys are getting a good taste of what I've had to deal with living in the AZ desert all these years. I never get much work done in the summers. We have AC, but the back room where I have my work area set up is still about 92 degrees, any cooler and we'd go broke paying the electric bill. Can't forge outside after about 7-8 in the morning. I always get bored this time of year and start doing goofy stuff. My latest hobby is making my own incense,... and drinking mega amounts of beer... Been watching a lot of TV too. Great stuff on the news these days. Glad the forum is here to mess around with too. My wife and I are heading up to the mountains soon, for some crawdad fishing. It should be 10-15 degrees cooler up there.

Tai, it has been unusually humid here too. Cool hobbies, I have a book on making incense and want to make some.

You guys don't want to know what the weather is like here. I'll say it sucks in the winter, how about that.

OK... 69F here right now. It will get up into the high 70's or low 80's later today. At 7800 feet elevation and on the north face it stays cool.

Daniel, The incense is fun. I found some aromatic herbs and rosins around my neighborhood and started experimenting with them. I get to play with oils, tinctures, charcoal powder, binders and,... fire! It involves chemistry, pyrotechnics, aromatherapy, visuals etc.

I've been thinking about getting a new pet to help pass the time.

A Burro!

I can't smoke weed anymore, because it aggravates my OCD, bi-polar-ism, tourettes syndrome and most of my phobias...

Hmph... here on the west coast of Canada we still haven't seen our summer yet... temperature has peaked at 29C only a couple of times, but we've had more rain than sun! Send some of the rays our ways! :D

I went out to cut some steel up today at 10AM. I worked for three hours, but the 100+ finally got to me and I said, "Enough".

I did cut out about twenty blanks in S35VN, and did some milling that was needed on a custom kitchen knife order. By then I looked like someone had turned a fire hose on me.
I plan on playing hookie from church tomorrow, as we have a guest soloist and I don't have to sing the anthem. I will hit the shop at 6-7AM and grind till noon or 1PM.

Whenever this weather breaks, I have about 100+ knives to work on. About 60-70 are already HTed and ready for handles, and the rest are nearly ready for HT.

I don't know if my Ashokan sword will get done in time, but I will work on it as soon as the temp drops, too. I have a backup sword that just needs the quilloins and a bit of finish work.I am having another forumite cast the quillions in bronze for me. That one could be wrapped up in twenty hours once the quillions are back.

Don't feel too bad because you are not alone. We have had 0 days of summer until last saturday when the heat finally came. It lasted a full 6 days, then last night the bottom fell out of the pot. 30 C (86F) yesterday with the airconditioner roaring away, then last night it fell to 8C or 47F and never rose past 13C or 55F today.

This will screw up the gardens again, as they just finally got going with the brief warm spell, and now they stop again which will stunt their growth.

We just don't get the sustained heat during our summers anymore. No more planting tomatoes, our climate has lead to cold wet summers, and weird mild short winters. The weather doesn't make sence anymore.
