Just couldn't help myself so I choose to use hot in the title. Since I've been making the smaller axes I really like the looks and feel of the grip and have been wanting to try this shape as a knife handle. This is my first try. Its got a 9" 5160 blade and dyed osage orange handle. The fittings are wrought iron. The little ax has a 4 1/2" head and 8" handle. More cute than an actual tool.

Very nice Ray! When my kids gets on with the Fire Dept. I am planning on getting him a damascus axe, if they are allowed..

I like the Fighter ,but that Damascus Ax is Stunning.I Like the Damascus Pattern and that Curly Maple Handle is just Exceptional & Tops the Ax Off Perfectly.Definately give yourself a Pat on the Back for Both.Keep Up the Great Work.

Nice pieces Raymond.
That little axe could come in handy at that small size for some tasks. I find a full size tomahawk or hatchet becomes cumbersome carrying in the field.

Those two knives in your avatar are nothing short of outstanding.
Could you post a photo of those. I don't remember ever seeing them.

Kevin, Made those two knives in 04. The larger of the two got Best Fighter at the BAKCA Show that same year. On the small axes 1" in handle length makes a lot of difference. 9" at least to me is where tool stops and cute takes over although in a pinch the 8" would be better than nothing.

They are of great accredit to you, as forging and finishing two pieces (large & small) that much alike is difficult to say the least.

I agree (as I thought your small axe had 8" exposed) that 1" makes a big difference at that length.

I had to chuckle after writing that. :o :D

I'd better leave it alone............

Holy Shmokes...that is one sweet axe! I would love to have something like that. Perfect light-duty belt-axe...could practically be stuffed in a bug-out-bag...or even EDC.

email incoming. ;)

Do you have a pic of the top end? What do you use to set the handle?

Truly a wonderful axe....been on my mind all night/morning!

Dan, I'll draw you word picture. The eye is real simular to what you would see on a hammer. Its oval shaped, about 1 1/4" long and about 5/8" wide. The handle is locked on with a wedge.

You're up early Ray! :D
You asked me what I thought of your knife w/t axe handle shape... Gotta ask, as the handle shape would be inviting to use it as a chopper - how heavy is the knife? The blade looks to be more of a fighter style than a chopper, but given the shape of the handle, it looks like it would work well in any field work situation! Now, if you remember the knife I bought at the OKCA show, I think a larger version of that with this new style handle might be a tool of beauty!

Also, I finally remembered to resupply my checkbook.. I'll be mailing it this week... Also, I think I may want to wait to get it at the Blade West show if you're going?
Let me know...
later...

Joe, I'm always up early. I'll be doing Blade West but also the Montana Show. If you wait till then the ax maybe gone. Up to you.

This handle shape will work real well with medium to large blades. I've got a couple smaller blades I'm wanting to start putting together and want to try this ax handle on but not real sure if it will work. Should find out soon. Got a lot of ideas in my head and not sure what will shake out first.

 Please tell me you're not going to start being like that von hagen guy :D His knives are nice but everytime I read his descriptions it seems like I'm watching the HSN... really nice knife

I use a small axe like that every year for field dressing deer (splitting pelvis). I have used a saw before but prefer the axe as it takes less time and doesn't snag the innards like a folding saw can. One quick "whack" and it's done. A small axe like that is also great for camp chores (pounding tent pegs, splitting up small kindling, etc.).

The blade you've designed for the ax-type handle really flows nicely into the handle itself. Looks like a winner to me.
