Somewhere inside a hotwater heater is supposed to be an iron rod that is the same material used for firesteels.I have access to a few busted ones that Im welcome to cannibalize for the rods-But do not exactly know where to find the rod.Anybody on these forums know the location of the ferro rod Im looking for?I have posted this on a couple forums to help in the search

Thanks

IIRC, it is actually a piece of magnesium, not the rod...But you may have heard something different than I did...

Perhaps have a look on the website of the company which make the water heaters.

If its in there, it should be listed on the 'exploded view' parts diagram which should be in the component/spare parts section.

Hope this helps.

it is a magnesium alloy and the couple I tried didn't burn well . I have taken hundreds of them out.they will give your water an odor if you have a water softener.they are on top of the heater it looks like a pipe plug it may be covered with a plastic cover on the jacket . you will need a 1-1/16th" socket a 1/2" breaker bar and a lot of ass to get it out.(put in with a machine and locking pipe dope)

Could you shave some powder off of the water heater rod and ignite it with a firesteel? If you had a nice pile of magnesium (alloy?) powder on a piece of birch with some tinder, wouldn't you get a nice hot burn for a moment to ignite the tinder? I don't know how magnesium alloys work so pardon my ignorance but it might make an interesting experiment.

Interesting idea, but seems like a lot of work to get a doan stick.....

If you can get one for free, it could be a lifetime supply of doan sticks! That is, if it works.
