Going down to see my son who lives in Branford CT. We usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express which is okay. However, the last couple times they were fully booked and we stayed at some places that were really awful. Like if I was 21 on Spring Break keeping the bathtub full of ice and beer awful. But I'm old now. Its surprising to me because Branford is actually quite a nice little town that they don't have decent hotels.

I know its right near New Haven but my son tells me that I will be immediately murdered upon venturing in to that fair city. Or something like that.

After driving down there the last thing I want to do is deal with traffic, which is why I liked staying right in Branford.

Any hints, tips or options?

I'll check and post in a bit. FWIW, I don't think you would be killed in New Haven...a few Yale students have been known to survive. ;)

Could google hotels for Hamden CT or Wallingford...they are close enough. Although, I would be tempted to look at the Omni Hotel in New Haven's downtown...it's in a perfectly fine area and there are a lot of great places to eat right around there you could walk to. If you did stay there Atticus Book Store is a good place for coffee and a snack.

Ha! Yeah, I don't think my son is serious about getting murderized, but he's been warned about NH so many times he just won't go there much. His roommate works in New Haven and, as yet is unmurdered, but says you really have to watch out what neighborhood you're in. Since my son grew up in Vermont, he's not really savvy to city issues. On the other hand, he happily travels all over the country going to nerdapaloozas (my term, actually something called PAX and Comic Con) without a care in the world. Although you have to be careful, because he happily calls himself a Geek (not the one that bites heads off chickens) but not a Nerd. Apparently, in his world of computer programming and gaming there is a difference.

Thanks for the tips. Turns out were going to stay in Milford (where he works), go out to dinner then take the train into NYC on Saturday morning.
