Yvsa said one of his other brothers wears a felt hat year round, claiming that it actually helps wick perspiration and heat away from the covered part of the head.
Yvsa also said it was an interesting concept, and he believed the brother's veracity, still wasn't sure about it.
l'm here to tell you I've a straw Baily and a felt one. So I put the felt one on yesterday and wore it about 14 hours instead of the straw.
The idea of the felt wicking perspiration away turned out to be closer in my experience of putting a pot on simmer and covering it. Boy does it cool down when you take the lid off. With the straw there is more ventilation to evaporate the sweat all the time.
Here on out, I'm keeping a good straw handy in addition to the one I wear, just like I keep a backup felt ready to go. That means I can take my time and pick it out so it's right.
