I love my ASH1, but the rear talon hole really bothers me. I keep thinking about grinding that thing off, but am afraid of ruining the knife. Has anyone done this mod and could post pictures of it? Any grinders here that would be willing to take on a small project like this?

I've seen that done on other knives and don't know why it wouldn't work for you. No pics to hand, though.

Since it's the rear, there's less concern about overheating due to friction.

i've been wanting to have that done on my ASHs for a while now but i don't have a belt grinder and haven't gotten around to sending them off to someone else.

The "BULLY" and Ducci both have original SH-1's with ground off butts.
Maybe one of them will be along and post a pic.

i have a factory bobber, and i have one that a 99% chance might get a similar mod!! it's not a ash, but, i feel you with the removing of the talon!!:D

I was thinking about the very same thing last night for my CG ASH1. I would be very interested in seeing pictures.

Randucci or Ban would do this for you I am sure.

For fun I made a fast (and poor) Photoshop of what an ASH looks like with the pommel rounded off. This is what one interpretation looks like to me:

Apologies again for my weak Photoshop-fu

Compare to:

Don't know if I like the look as much, but it would be much more comfortable for use. You also could grind a straight line to the "middle hump" and do away with the entire "beak"

I had something about like this in mind. It would include trimming off some of the scales. Apoligies in advance to Dr. Lunde for stealing and slaughtering his image.

Pretty close to what you had silverdragon, just a little bit higher.

Nice one Silas, that is the best looking Ash I have seen... I love the aftermarket mod knifes. A ban job?

It looks interesting. I personally love the knife as is but if its bothering you get rid of it (the talon hole I mean) I am sure Ban or someone would do it for you and do a good job of it.

Yeah it's a pic of one that Ban did for somebody here. I photochopped the rear talon off for this thread.

Here's another chop. I personally prefer the rear talon but it doesn't look bad without it.

Here's a mod I've been thinking about having done to my 3B2. Along with stripping it and giving it a DCBB finish.

I too didn't like the rear talon hole since it really does bite into my pinky when I chop. So I decided it wouldn't do and decided it needed to go. So this is my Ash1 after a bit of modification madness......

No it's not a photoshop job. It's a home grown angle grinder and drill press job.

The handle has been lightened and it now feels just right for my hands. (blade heavy). I can grip it in a rear position for better chopping now. I tested it on some dry Blue Gum (shown). Works great (within the limitations of a short chopper). Its about 1.5 oz lighter then the standard cg ash1.

I took it on a goat hunt and without going into details, it worked great even with the factory v grind edge. Sorry I didn't have a camera.

It's my one and only busse (considering the global situation it may stay that way for a long time) and I got it as a user in the field. There was no point in having a user that you didn't like using so I modified it.

When I get a chance I'll try to do a review on it and how it handles in the field.
