I thought it was worth the price of admission, but the movie definitely isn't for everyone. Did you see Hero? If you liked Hero, you'd probably like House of Flying Daggers. The movie moves at about the same pace (slow, slow, ACTION!, slow, slow, ACTION!), has the wuxia-style fights, and is visually outstanding.
If you do see the movie, it's interesting to note that Zhang Yimou put in a subtle tone of his distaste for the Government.

I quite enjoyed the film but I know people who hate it. Apparently its based on a Chinese fable, and there are definately a few bits that are symbolic/ fable like in it.
