Well, since you asked for household items... I think that just about any oil lubricant will be better than nothing, but if you can make it down to the local Wal Mart, then you might pick up either a can of Remington's RemOil or a can of Sheath (Birchwood Casey, i think). Some of my friends in the airgun world have tested various easily available oils for their rust protection properties, and RemOil came out on top, followed very closely by Sheath.

Wax is good especially Renaissance wax. But, for general cleaning and lubrication you can try baby oil. The baby oil isn't petroleum based so it will not darkened your knife. Its also pretty good for taking dirt and gunk off the blade.

WD-40 is good for cleaning and does resist rust, though it's not a good fix for long-term storage.

To remove sticky, gummy stuff like tape residue from a user (not a collectible), try a bit of Goof Off (which is sold at Home Depot and many grocery and hardware stores). This stuff is Xylene and a very strong solvent. Keep it away from wood and other handle materials. Put a few drops on a paper towel and they apply that to the blade. It's great for sticky, gooey stuff, but then again, WD-40 is too and I've never heard a report of it attacking anything desirable.

You can also get Silicone-treated "gun and reel" cloths at most any gun shop or Sporting Goods store that'll work nicely.
