Household materials a stropping compound?

are there any that i could use?

Let's start a list. Everybody add what they can think of.

1. Magazine covers
2. Telephone book covers
3. Shirt cardboards
4. Shoe box covers
5. Denim jeans
6. A virgin's thigh (we should be so lucky)
7. Leather belts
8. Sofa arm rests
9. Unglazed ceramic rims (underneath bowls)
10.Car polish applied to a flat board

That's good beginning. Somebody else fill in some more.

Stitchawl

1) Aluminum bar stock (has a micro layer of Al2O3 on the surface)
1A) Base of my iMac is aluminum flat stock with matte finish.
2) Etched (frosted) glass
3) Smooth wood or plaster painted with flat latex paint. If you don't think it is abrasive, try running aluminum along a flat wall. That black mark is the aluminum rubbing off on the paint.
4) Prefinished wood flooring (Al2O3 again)
5) Raw bamboo, teak, or rubberwood (SiO2 naturally present)

valve lapping compound. (yes, it's in my toolbox)
long chromed socket extension makes a good honing steel, but is not abrasive.
mdf scraps
the non-abrasive side of an emory cloth sanding belt.

Of course a leather belt but you can also use a block of stainless steel, which has a thin layer of chromium oxide.
