I broke in the new year with a coyote hunt this morning. One of my other hobbies is hunting, and predator calling is my favorite. We walked about 3.5 miles this morning and made three sets. It was windy, but we saw two coyotes. I got this one at about 80 yards with my Remington 788 in .223 Rem. It came in to a Burnham Brothers Mini-Blaster mouth call.

This place has been the source of much of my mesquite burl over the past four years. It was cleared at least 15 years ago, maybe 20, and there are burl stumps EVERYWHERE. Most of them are a little more punky than I like, but there is still plenty of good wood available. I hauled out three stumps this morning including one monster one about 80 pounds.

Nice kill! Gotta love them 788's! Have several of them, only the smaller calibers now, 6mm and smaller. Not worth having the headspace redone on them, but I did on the 6mm. Great coyote guns with lightning fast lock time.

Always nice to be able to harvest your own burls!

Happy hunting!

I can't think of a better way to spend the 1st day or any other day for that matter Jason.
When I lived in AZ in the early 70's I had a 6mm in a 788, more than one yote felt its sting.
Cool pic.

After seeing Jason's picture, and that dead coyote, I think I'll run out to the ranch tomorrow! Nothing like getting out in God's country, away from the traffic, noise, people, and enjoying the quiet nature. Once upon a time I had a Remington 788 in 22-250 Ackley Improved. The first time I shot it was in an underground rifle range. I fired one shot, noticed where it hit, and fired the second shot. I thought I had missed the paper! I fired the third shot....same thing.....thought it didn't even hit the target. Retrieved target and there was one hole, just a smidgen larger than .224. I have never had a gun that shot better, including Sako's, which I live and swear by. The 788 was known as Remington's "budget tackdriver". I haven't tried them yet, but I hear Remington's new 783 is supposed to be another tack driver. Ugly as sin, though. Thanks for sharing the picture, Jason!
