How about a Black Bear Classic in STAG?

I'm trying to put together an all stag display of classic knife styles. I have a Cold Steel Trail Master Bowie in stag, and a Loveless style drop point hunter by GenO Denning. I was playing around witht the idea of a Loveless style Black Bear Classic in stag. I've never seen a real Loveless like that, I do know I couldn't afford it if it did. So, I was thinking of rehandling a CS-14BBC with Stag, has anyone ever seen this, done this, or would consider doing something like that?

Just so you understand, when I said I couldn't afford a real Loveless, that is not to miss-lead you into thinking I can afford this CS version either, I'm just curious.

My rendering of stag isn't that good, but it might look something like this...

Hi Phil,

The knife is actually called a "Big Bear".

But the one you have in the pic is about right.

Les

Sorry Les, I was using Cold Steels name for the knife. So R. Loveless does do them in stag? Must be an amazing piece. Can you think of anyone else?

Phil,

George Herron by far makes the best Loveless Style Big Bear, considering all factors.

1) Bob Loveless does not have sole authorship of his knives, and hasnt for some time. Hope I didnt burst anyone's bubble.

2) Bob's Big Bear with Stag from him (remember he is in his 70's) around $4,000.00. Open market price $$6,500 - $8,000. Mostly depending on what JW thinks they should be selling for! <G>

George Herron, if you can get one directly from him. Of course you have to know George real well to get one of these. From George around $900.00. Open market with Stag $1,300 to $1,600. Yes, George does his own work.

Another guy in this race is Steve Johnson (who used to work with Loveless). Makes a nice one around $2,500 (note he charges $200 extra for stainless steel fittings over Nickel Silver, don't really know why, but have a theroy). Has a 4 year wait and his work is superior! Open market, $4,000.00.

Other makes to consider in the genera, Lloyd Pendelton, Joe Kious (real nice work for the money), maker I see a lot in AG Russel's catalog Voorhes (SP), I have never seen one in person, but they look pretty good for the money. Walter Brend does a pretty nice one when he has a mind to. Last but not least David Broadwell, who I feel makes the best sub-hilt fighters in the world.

Something to consider as well, Loveless knives are starting to be counterfitted, so beware of this.

Les

Les,

So what's your theory on the price increase for stainless?

Phil,

You might want to post the question about rehandling the Cold Steel version over in the Shop forum. If you could weaken the bond of the epoxy to the tang through heat or chemicals maybe you could then knock the pins out, remove the micarta and replace with stag scales...

Les, those makers are all great, problem is they would all be out of my price range, even if I were working.

And so...on to Plan B, which is;
Buy a Cold Steel Black Bear Classic and have someone slap on a Stag handle. Suggestions anyone?

Plan C is buy the CS, and put the handle on myself.

Plan D is don't buy anything and just put the photo I have in My Knives, PhotoPoint Album, and lie, "Yeah, that's the ticket! Yeah, it's a real Loveless, too bad you can't see his mark on it."
