Good idea maybe we should come up with some more specific guide lines so the designs arent to unique from one another to compare.

Yeah maybe, I wouldn't want to restrict their design too much though or all the knives might just look the same !

Interesting idea!

Of course, Fiddleback (Andy Roy), already has at least a couple of designs that I feel are pretty close to perfect.;)

Along those lines, maybe you shouldn't set guidelines for the design, but for the tasks. Everyone has a different idea of what a "camp knife" should be. For some it is to cut a PB&J in half and for others it is to split wood.

Since it is your contest, maybe you should do something like "It should excel at these tasks, in this order of priority."

Just another thought on it.

I'm not much into competing with the other makers here as I think they all excel at what they do but it would be fun to make a knife for this.

i would like to see that madey they could make a 7' to 10' blade and send them to a certain bladefourms member and have them do chop offs and other test

If knife makers are going to spend their time and resources making these knives, is it possible we can reward them with money?

In a process like an inverted raffle, can team members who wish to vote buy shares, and vote for a winner accordingly?

And then conduct a direct raffle of the entry knives and award those knives to the share holders?

Just thinking out loud...

I have almost cleaned up all my loose ends and will have some free time soon so I am game:)

What did you have in mind like Brian said???

I was thinking of something along the lines of a 5"-7" blade that can do everything from whittle a tent peg, make fuzz sticks, split wood for kindling, make trap parts, slice tomatoes and skin rabbits....pretty much a good all rounder !

Maybe someone else has tasks that I have missed !!!

That sounds good.

okay, mid size- upper limit 7 inches, function tests:

whittle tent pegs
make traps
split firewood
make fuzz sticks and kindling.
camp kitchen food prep
some sort of game handling...

design choices aside, is this something you want to have tested by a group, like send it out to tony and big mike or down south to reuben or something? Or photos of knives doing at least some of the work?

All I can say is fileting fish should be part of it. I gotta say though, I think this is a little too general. Some people think an 8 X 1/4 inch Busse is the all around knife and some think a 4 X 3/32 inch Nessmuk/Bushcraft style is the perfect knife.

I can fillet fish with an axe.:D:thumbup:

The way I see it,

This knife should be looked as a one and only, no little knife to go with it, and versus.

When you have a small 4" knife, any serious wood trekking is going to require a hatchet or larger.

And busse is going to need a small slicer to accompany it.

Awesome idea.
MattM's idea about a raffle or way of paying the makers and getting a chance at winning one of the knives is also a great idea. I'm just not sure how we'd arrange it. Other sites have similar raffles, but I don't think it's been done on here (At least not in the two years I've been a member).

Thank you for saying this. Really, my entire line are camp knives. You have to tell me what tasks you want it to do really well at, OK at, and passable at. Until I can make a lightsaber, I can't do everything with one blade.

I'd be very disapointed if you didn't give this a try!

This is what I needed to hear.

I'm game. I'll either be submitting a Woodsman, or a Hunter. Probably a woodsman, since I think it'll excel better at the game prep/fileting fish part.
