I'll start with something already accessible...

A Buck 120BR and a new S&W 627 Pro:

And... a Custom Shop BG-42/Fiji wood/NS 110 with a long discontinued S&W 296:

If this isn't 'pc' here, please forgive me, dear moderators - and close/toss the thread!

I'll play. An old S&W mod 37 .38spl Airweight. Belonged to a family member who did carry it on the job. It has been relegated to heirloom status, but is handy and ready for action if necessary.

I like my fiiji beegee without the pins and with the finger grooves. It will be a user this coming hunting season. Will be my first field test of BG42 factory edge.

I think I've posted these before in another BF thread...it's been awhile though so I'll post them up again:D.

The FG Stag 110, 103 and 118 just got back from the annual trek in the hills after the ever elusive(again this year:grumpy:) elk. The Ruger Vaquaro in 45 Colt made the trip also. Preston

G'day mate, from Australia.. those are very nice pictures.. first post too..:o just a quick question about your 103 skinner,
l'm thinking of getting a 103 to complement the 119 l was given as a gift last month, it will be used mostly on Sambar ( and maybe Fallow ) deer here in Oz, just wondering how you find it for skinning there, re blade length, sharpness etc etc
l have other lesser quality :D knives too but want to keep it in the 'family' this time, tried to send this via Pm but couldn't..
TIA,
cheers,

I found another oldie from last fall - a then new, and still a beauty, #408 Kalinga Pro (S30V) and my first S&W, a 625MG:

GFR, I have used the 103 on elk, deer, fox and coyotes, etc. The feature that I like most about the 103 is the large curved front of the blade and that the tip is far up that curve. You'll see some skinners that have a pointed tip at the end of a nice rounded curve. When skinning that tip can easily cut through the skin if the operator is not careful or fatigued...usually both.

I don't think the blade length has changed but the thickness on the newer production has changed. It is thinner and for me makes the balance in the hand not as good. The heavier blade makes the work easier. Buck may have changed the handle dimensions...maybe Joe H of CJ will chime in on this or you could e-mail one of them. I have several of the older 103s and one newer that I don't use 'cuase of the stated reasons, but it's BR and 'purty';).

Sharpness is a relative thing and does depend on your skill to put the initial edge on the blade. Keeping it up is also your doing...if you use the edge to where it loses it's effectiveness then you have to spend more time bringing it back. When skinning an animal fatty substances build up on the blade and need to be cleaned off.

Like all Bucks the 103 has gone through the steel changes...there might be some out there with premium steel, but I find the regular steel very serviceable.

Good luck there in Oz with your hunting, HTH, Preston

Thanks mate, for your honest critique of the knife, l did like the look of the 103 for the reason you mentioned (the tip ) but may just wait awhile and do some more research before deciding whether l actually need another knife just for skinning, as mentioned previously l do have other skinning knives ( but they're not as 'purty' :D as the buck ),

l know the 119 isn't going to be the best knife for skinning either but it was a gift from my son for Father's Day so will be going hunting for Sambar with us when the 'season' returns next year, it's getting too hot here now ( and noisy ) to go stumbling around the mountains,

Thanks again,
