I think there was thread awhile back on the perfect mattress. I'm in need of a new one and was leaning toward the very expensive "Heavenly Bed" from Westin. Not happening!

Your advise is greatly appreciated.

You mean mats for camping?
I compared recently ordinary closed cell mats with self-inflating mats because I was recently on the market for mats for camping. Well, if you sleep on grass land, then both are the same, but on stones the self-inflating mat is better. 1” thickness of self-inflating mat I found very comfortable, but there are even thicker models. Inflating mats – I will never buy them again!

Actually, I'm looking for a mattress for my home. Your advise for camping is well taken, though. We'll also be doing a few campouts over the next year or so.

There are no better matresses than the stuff that kingsdown makes. I've tried it all from sleepnumber, simmons, serta, seally, ect... The bed that I have now is a kingsdown, it is one of four models of one of their lines. At the stores they sell them at the put you on a diagnostic mattress and ask you if you have any bed-related sore place and fit you to the mattress that provides you with the best comfort/support. No one values sleep any more than I do and while these things cost a lot of money they give you a return that is is far more valueable than any dollar amount.
