How About a "Mini Rescue Jr." ?

My sheepfoot bladed Ladybug is a great keychain knife. It really can make quick work of straps, string, rope etc. I think that a Rescue Jr. with a 2.25 - 2.5" blade and an OAL of 6-6.5" would be a great small work knife that would be better than the Recue Jr. which is a tad over the 3" limit in many areas. I think that such a knife with zytel scales and an ATS-55 blade would be fairly cheap to produce. It would also be nice if it would be available in 50/50 as well as full serrations. What do you think guys?

Actually, I have a C19! I hadn't thought of that, but I'm thinking in terms of a fairly inexpensive, zytel lockback in stead of G-10 and a liner lock.

I just got one of those (from you, Tony Cheese?)
Terzuola folders and I love it.
I'm very, very, very surprized it never took off,
given the popularity of the BM 940, since they have a very, very similiar shape.
Now, to use it, or not to use it :(
that is a VERY tough decision for me.

You might as well use it, the knife is definitely a utilitarian piece and not a "pretty" knife. BTW, I still have my C19 & C15, you must have gotten them from someone else.

Hi Anthony. We're in the process of redesigning the Large Rescue. Once the new model is underway, we'll consider what to do what the other Rescue versions. Is it the "legal end" of the blade length that you don't care for?

I'm not Anthony, but it is for me. I'd have one or two Ltwt Natives and a Rescue Jr if that extra 1/8 got shaved off. I never understood the reason for that; makes it illegal in a couple of places, and 1/8 really doesn't add /that/ /much/ to cutting ability.

Sal, it is the question of legality that makes a 2.5" bladed Rescue a good idea to me. That shorter length would make it legal in the great majority of places where one can carry a knife. To me legality is the major reason why a company should make a "mini" or "junior" version of a knife. I also would love to see a 50/50 version of the Rescue Jr.
Such a design would make the knife more versatile because the plain edge is just so much better for delicate cutting and some times a delicate edge is useful even on a rescue, utility type of knife.

Thanx for the input Anthony. The new large Rescue has a unique blade shape that also incorportes a combination edge. If the concept is well received, a 2.5" version would not be a problem.

Hi Sal,

A few Rescue re-design questions:

1. Will the blade steel be getting an upgrade like the Delica and Endura?

2. Will the combo edge be an option in addition to full-serrations, or is it a feature integral to the new blade shape?

3. Is this the new Firefighter's/Emergency knife design you mentioned on Techno-junkies, or is that a separate design?

4. Will there be a lock upgrade?

And one idea:

On the request for a new Rescue Jr. with a 2.5" blade. If you decide to go that route, why not use the "Salsa" platform -- an FRN Salsa with the new Rescue blade? It seems to me that the new handle platform designed for a blade that length would offer superior ergos to a reduced copy of the handle used by the large Rescue.

Hi Carlos.

1. Blade steel is VG-10

2. The combo edge will be standard and is relative to the handle in position.

3. Actually no. the firefighters knife we discussed in the tekno junkies forum was a gathering of input for was was going to be a heavy duty firefighters tool and EMT tool together. We have since decided that the needs are too varied and we'd end up with an "elephant with 5 horse legs and 6 tusks".

So we took another tack. The new Rescue is a refinement or evolution of the Rescue style line (C02, C14) that we've kept around since '81. We've just added a few new features that we believe will be useful and user friendly.

4. We will continue to use a lockback, but we're adding the Boye indent. Lock strength will have a Heavy Duty strength rating.

Thanx for the idea/input, always appreciated. The new Rescue design employs similar ergos as the Salsa, but has additional features in the handle that won't work well on the Salsa platform. Sorry to be so secretive. The final design isn't signed off on yet so I don't want to say too much.

Thanks Sal,

There's a spot in my backpack reserved for the new Rescue. :D
Put me down for one with an orange handle.

No need to apologize for secrecy. Just give us an update once things are finalized. :)

Well, due to the upcoming Boston ordinance  I'm going to have to cancel my reservation for a new Rescue and add my vote for a 2.5" Mini Rescue / New Rescue Jr.

Thank you Carlos. Well, that's two sold. One to Anthony and one to Carlos. Tooling costs being what they are, they will cost you $20,000 each. Please send a P.O. to......

Just kidding. We'll keep a 2.25" in mind. It's very Politically Friendly and very useful.

Hey Anthony. We could probably grind one a little shorter for you at the plant. I don't think you would want a shorter handle.

Well, maybe $15,000... :D :D :D :D :D

I've heard recently that many Federal employees, including military personnel, are now finding the old 2.5" Federal blade limit being enforced in the buildings/bases that they work. So a 2.4" blade Rescue Jr. may actually have wide application.

Sal, your offer to grind the blade slightly shorter is greatly appreciated. Your attentiveness to your customers is definitely at the heart of Spyderco's strong following. As for general production, I would love to see more 2.25-3.0" knives instead because so many areas have 3" or 2.5" blade limits.
