How about a new Dragon Fly?

In another thread Sal was gauging interest in a new sprint run of the DF. Considering my enthusiasm for this little knife, I thought the idea deserved its own thread. I’ve had the stainless version for almost a year now and feel the shape and size work well for me. It’s just a bit heavy. Something lighter than stainless but more substantial than FRN and cheaper than CF is my suggestion.

I envision a simple G10, VG-10 or even ATS-55 version that would maintain the scrappy, under stated personality that has made the DF so popular. Any other suggestions?

How about an Almite Dragonfly ? Maybe in a similar colour to the Lum Chinese ?
Now that whould be something I would certainly be interested in !

Cheers

Funny StevieK we must think alike. I just wrote a similar idea onthe other thread. An Almite with VG-10 blade and Tip down/tip up positions would be AWESOME! In my world anyway.

I'd buy a G-10 one. The dragonfly was my first Spyderco...and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it. Love to have a lefty one as well since I carry a knife in each front pocket...

Some of the info from the SHOT Show said there was a "Pearlex" DF coming-there was a pic of the Cricket.
I like the idea of the Almite w/VG-10 or ATS-55.

Green Almite, plain edge, w/VG-10 would definitely get my interest.

I also like the idea of an Almite Dragonfly, and the idea of it being the same or similar color as the Lum Chinese folder sounds excellent. (I also dislike FRN, although I have it on some knives), but still like something "dressier" than G10. Stainess is a little too heavy, and carbon fiber is too expensive. The ideal would be aluminum (I love my aluminum Cricket).

The other thing I'd recommend would be blade steel made from VG10 (I really love the flat ground edge on my Calypso Jr lightweight, but would like to have it in a slightly smaller package; the Dragonfly would be the perfect platform.)

In spite of all of the Spydercos I have, I end up carrying my stainless Dragonfly and aluminum Cricket the most. Some of the others are just too big for daily carry.

However, I'd be VERY happy to add an aluminum, plain-edge, VG10 Dragonfly to my collection, and know others who feel the same.

Thanks for listening Sal...

Flat grind in VG-10 would be very nice. Also a non-FRN handle (I'm not picky), in a tasteful color. I agree with the other posters, the handle material must keep the overall weight down. And keep the clip tip up or reversible (the only reason I don't own a CF model). A slimmer, detachable clip, in comparison to the FRN model, would also be appreciated.

I've always considered the Dragonfly to be a sleeper self defense tool. Its small size disguises its cutting potential. From a defensive tool standpoint, I would like to see the following:

Recessed lock ala Boye like the new Delicas/Enduras. (Compression lock would be great, but I'm assuming not practical.)

Redesigned choil. The current choil positions the finger too close to the blade in any type of grip. You need to choke down lower on the handle to get a safe grip.

I know the Dragonfly will never be an MBC class knife. But I really like the concept of a inconspicuous, non-threatening looking gentleman's knife that's design allows it to be used for effective defensive purposes if needed.

I just gor a SS Dragonfly and it is a very nice little knife, sort of a junior Calypso Jr. (one of my favorites). My only complaint is that for office carry it carries to high a profile. The bright SS clip and the 1/2" or so of SS handle that stick up make it very visible, even carried inside the waistband. I think the Calypso Jr. is actually more discreet with its black clip and much lower profile, despite being a much bigger knife. I will probably end up buying a Navigator with its tip down carry in order to have a lower profile small knife.

A Dragonfly in green Almite has my vote.

Ivory micarta might be nice too.

I love my Dragonfly, and would definitely purchase another in this style.

Green Dragonfly sounds great... Green G-10 that is!!

My only complaint as well. Couldn't the lanyard hole be ditched in favor of a lower profile clip? I know, the clip would have to be redesigned to allow for the shape of the handle. I'm already picturing a green Almite DF

The only thing I don't like about the zytel version is the plastic clip. A removable clip and maybe ATS-55 or VG-10 would make it perfect. An almite version would be fantastic!

My dream DF is of black micarta like micarta calypsos. They would form a classy family. Calypso (senior) and micarta vg-10 DF would be my favourite carry combo.

While I'm dreaming: titanium DF and large Calypso. That would be THE ultimate knife combo.

I think of all the suggestions in this thread, green almite with VG-10 is my favorite, but micarta sounds very nice as well.

I have a carbon fiber dragonfly, and recently got an almite navigator. Both great small knives, but if you could combine the handle ergonomics and blade shape/grind of the DF with the almite material of the navigator, you'd have an almost perfect small knife!

IMO, anyway.

P.S. Another advantage the Navigator has over the DF is the hole; it's bigger on the Navigator, and - perhaps because of the overall geometry - easier to open. But the DF design overall is better, I think,

Well,

I had a Navigator, and sold it to my brother Bryan, who traded it back to me, I traded it back to him, he traded it my brother Matt. But, all through that I liked it, though I did not know why.

I bought a Mouse.

It has educated me about small knives.

So I traded for a Navigator, and I plan on keeping it.

Which brings me around to why I am posting.

Awhile back Sal made the comment that Spyderco was focusing on smaller knives due the political and cultural climate, I think I agree with his choice.

Smaller knives are less obtrusive, easier to carry, less likely to scare, and the way Spyderco makes them, very functional.

My Mouse and Navigator have been telling me that a Dragonfly would be a great companion. As would a mini-Lum Chinese.

My thoughts on a sprint Dragonfly. Aluminum with Almite or G-10 would be very acceptable. An Almite coated Aluminum Dragonfly would offer the chance to color the scales to make it even more friendly looking. Or a slotted Aluminum handle, with color, oh my. G-10 would probably offer a better grip, and a chance to add the shell treatment, which would be very nice, and friendly looking.

Steel, I will leave that up to Sal and the crew, I have yet to be seriously disappointed.

As to the lanyard hole. Any knife that is made to be used should have one.

And if you could drill a set of holes for different carry options, ah yes. Maybe go back to a 2-screw clip to help with any crowding problems?
