How about a sharpening forum?

How about we make a special forum just for sharpening? It seems a lot of questions are about sharpening, it would be easier if people who wanted to learn how to sharpen just looked in one specialized forum, yes?

Unfortunately, I suspect alot of us would rather look into do it yourself home dentistry.

Touch one of those nice expensive knives in your collection and it will be instantly downgraded from "mint" to "good".

It is also one of those subjects that we can spend a month reading and talking about with little result; or, 30 minutes with someone who knows and learn everything we would need.

Are there any sharpening tutors in the house?

That is basically what this general forum is for, I have seen it been asked around here several times, and people always have their own answer.............

I dont really think this would be necessary, if you run a search through this forum, and year 1 I'm sure you will be innundated with threads about sharpening.

Sounds like a good idea to me also, I know if they had one I would check it everytime I am here.

I didn't have anyone to teach me in person.

I learned by myself and reading an occasional bit on this forum. Sad, cuz half of my knives are heavily scratched from me not knowing what i was doing when i started. Took me about 2 years to figure it out. Now i try to help people out when their knives dull cuz i don't want them to learn the hard way like i did.

I'm glad to see you are so enthusiastic Phil

Since some folks seem to think sharpening is a bit shallow, or maybe just too dull, all by itself, we could group it in knife care. Then we'd have something there for the collectors, who want a stone to come as close to their knives as I want the vermouth to come to the gin in my martinis, and we'd have something for the users, who occasionally have to stop cutting on a large animal, and re-sharpen their blade, or at least swap knives.

I think the desire exists for something along those lines. I fully believe sharpening has enough depth to take up its own forum, but I would not mind mixing it with other knife care aspects.

I think it is an excellent idea. We have a sharpening FAQ, so you know it is a major topic. The people likeliest to need the information are newcomers who would find it difficult to pick out information by using search. They wouldn't know terminology or history of the topic around here.

My interest in knives is secondary to my interest cutlery steels and sharpening. I never keep a factory edge. I don't collect any knives in the unimproved factory state. My perspective is that only dull people keep a factory edge.

I think Comrade Chang has a most worthy idea. I think we should have a sharpening forum, and I nominate Jeff Clark for Moderator.

Okay, I feel another "top ten" list coming on.

Top Ten New Forums We'll Probably Never See

1. The "What's in Your Pockets" Forum
2. The "If You Could Have Just One . . ." Forum
3. The "Knives and Wives" Forum
4. The "Knives and Metal Detectors" Forum
5. The "Read This" Forum
6. The "Hey Spark" Forum
7. The "I Started with One Table at a Flea Market" Forum
8. The "I Need a Number" Forum
9. The "More People Are Killed with Kitchen Knives" Forum
10. The "Ouch, I Cut Myself" Forum

Stop when you get to bone.

I would love to see a sharpening/knife care forum. I think even non-beginners would like the idea. I know I'd like to talk in much detail about sharpening stones, steeling, etc. I'd check it oue every time I came to the forums. Great Idea!!!

I don't know about a whole forum, but I've been thinking for some time we ought to have more FAQs. The FAQ Joe wrote is good; his methods work, but there are other methods that work, too. We all have our own favorite methods and we'll never agree on which is the best way.... If I write up how I do it, and a dozen or two other guys write up how they like to do it, new people could read them all and ... I dunno. Would it just confuse the heck out of them and they'd all run to the general forum and ask, "Which one of all those sharpening methods should I use??? Please help me, I read all 30 different sharpening FAQs and now I'm so confused I don't know which way is up any more!"

I don't know ... maybe we're better off with just one FAQ to point people to.

I think I'm going to add to that list of forums I hope we'll never see a little later ... for now, just one:

Hrmm... where is Spark or Mr. T? I'd like to hear what they have to say about a sharpening forums, or a knife care forums as Stryver suggested.

I think a little confusion is a good thing. It keeps us from getting complacent. If you have a sharpening forum it will give interested parties a place to research. It will also be more current. You can share information like where to find the best prices on DMT 8" bench hones this week.

If there's really enough traffic for a sharpening forum, I'd certainly participate. Or maybe it makes sense to just have a Knife Design, Function, and Sharpening Forum or something like that, since a place todiscuss more technical topics generally doesn't sound like a bad idea.

For a sharpening forum, the best idea seems to me to have multiple moderators, with different views on sharpening methods (as Cougar suggested above). I'm already convinced there are some beginners for whom Sal Glesser's methods work better than mine. A few different approaches would be nice to have.

I'm afraid I would not be a frequent visitor to the sharpening forum, although it is something we all do, it is something (like a few other things) I'd rather not talk or read about, especially on a daily/weekly basis

. Main reason is it would be very boring, do you have trainspotters in the US? Some of their behaviour patterns have been linked to mild autism (not a joke

Just my tuppence worth.
