OK I re-polished that black hamon and made it white.

Is this more to your liking?

Very nice!!

Which polishing technique did you go with?

Michael,

Just 6000 grit polishing paper and simichrome.

Here's a close up so you can see the grain.

It's a lighting problem, but the back is actually darker than the edge and the mune is polished but looks black in the closeup. Dang I which I was better at photos.

Steve

If you guys can't tell - I'm real excited about this!

PPS Sunfishman your avatar busts me up everytime I see it and your knives are pure inspiration!!

That hamon line looks great! I love knives with Hamon Lines. Nice Job.

I agree on both accounts! That melon-headed cat, I think it's the angles of the eyes and the whiskers, can't quite place it, but it's the coolest thing I've ever seen. I sent a picture of it to my wife where she works, so I'ts probably gone around the globe by now. And Don's knives, 2nd to none! BTW, I got to work with Don's wife a little on some Ebay transactions, they're really great folks to do business with. In todays fast and furious world, those are quailites I really look for.

And he calls it 'hamon' so I know exactly what he's talking about ! Nice work Steve.

Sando, i like the white ones better, seems like you can see the steel better or something. But which one do you like the best? :D

Mete: Maybe I should have called it a  temper line  .

Roger: 1072

Michael: You bet, after all it's your clay job! Thanks again. BTW after re-sanding I had to re-etch - hope I didn't screw it up.

Steve

so, if I understand correctly.....you could repeat these results by sanding to a high grit and then lightly etching? (just watch to make sure)

What did you use to etch?

Daniel,

Too much sanding will re-smooth the surface and reduce the effect - which is what happened. So after re-sanding I had to re-etch and then re-polish.

That turned out to be the trick for me. You have to do something after the etch, but not too much.

Well buddy, the same as everyone else: ferric cloride

Actually, the whole thing is pretty much what is published on this forum.

I'm just so darned excited about doing it myself........

Steve

Dan, I noticed your "ABS" reference. That does it, I'm joining too.
